Have anybody seen the following symptoms? Any help appreciated!

A client of mine says his (my) app and OpenInsight have started running slow and jerky. When he enters data from the keyboard the letters appear with some delay. The first three or four letters may appear immediately, but the next ones are delayed. When he clicks scrollbars they don't respond immediately. In addition forms and windows take time to close, but they still seem open at normal speed. The problem shows itself both in the app and in OI itself - he's tried Database Manager. He's also tried Rebuild System Index where the processing seems to run at normal speed. So it's interface stuff that's slow, not calculations and table access, I think.

Here is the relevant sequence of events as related to me: The app has worked OK until today. Today when he ran the app (alone - no other programs were running), and he did the first save + index update (my app updates indexes after each save), the computer hang. He restarted the computer, and then the aforemented problems began. First it was not only the OI app that was slow. He saw the same symptoms with key delay in Word too. He rebooted a few times, but the app is just as bad. Word, however, at some unknown point in time got better and now seems normal.

Since both Word and OI/my app had problems I was tempted to believe the problem had to do e.g with Windows or the hardware, and nothing to do with OI/the app. But as I said Word got well again, but not OI/the app.

The client's equipment consists of a PC with Win95, a scanner and a printer - no network. The app is developed in OI 3.3 or 3.61 - single user development.

(LH Verify can find no fault with the table he saved to.)

Hi Oystein,

Does this app have background indexing turned on?

Carl,

In early versions of the app we used background indexing, but not for a while now. I'm almost certain this user runs a later version. I've called him back with several useless suggestions already, so please tell me first if background indexing really could cause symptoms like the delays he gets before keyed-in characters appear on the screen.

Or do you think that background indexing could have turned itself on???

Hi Oystein,

I've seen background indexing produce the keystroke delay, so it's worth looking at. I don't believe it could jsut 'turn itself on' but what the hell, I've seen weirder stuff happen in OI before now.

Carl,

Forgot to tell you, but it was background indexing all right! And I think it somehow must have turned itself on. Thanks.
