Has anyone ever used OI as a front end for Pick database systems, such as Pick Systems, UniVerse, Unidata (now Ardent)? The data would be on those databases, but OI would be the front-end.

As a guy that still does consulting on Pick systems every once in a while, I can tell you that, yes it would be nice, but God knows it's not practical.

What you would need for that is a custom piece of software that can be invoked from a MFS( modified filing system) placed on an OI table. Like that OI would still think that it has a native table, but in actuality all the data is read and written to Pick.

So, in theory if you write or buy a piece of Dos/Windows software that can read/write records directly from Pick, you can use that to trick OI's filing system. But if you're looking for the Windows interface to Pick and their Windows emulation software is not good enough, might as well convert the whole app to OI. You can keep the same table layouts, so the big problem would be re-doing the interface.

Well, that's my 2c.

We have bought the source code for teh Universe/Unidata bond which allows the use of OI as a front end against the above. Never quite finsihed as there was insufficient commercial imperatives. It used an old Universe technology for data access - sure this would be updated these days.

Why isn't it worthwhile for Revelation to market such a direct interface from OI into the Pick market. It seems that it would be a captive audience, and it would only be expanding Revelations market share.

It wouldn't be quite so captive and not much market share. Pick people are probably going to D3, ViaSystems, or other front ends that already do this kind of stuff.
