I have a AREV 2.1 app that sometime in the last few years has aquired a few GFE's in the main help file. This was not noticed until it was quite severe and the bad file had filled all the backups. How would I go about correcting the problem? The most recent version of disks I can find is the 2.0 upgrade floppys.

James,

Are you running ARev over a network? If so, you definitely want to consider purchasing one of our networking products which are designed to prevent the corruption caused by GFE's and enhance performance. Contact our Customer Care Dept. if you would like to purchase one at (800) 262-4747.

As far as the GFE you have now in you HELP file, I hope that

this Knowledge Base article will be of use.

Good luck,

What do you mean by the *Main* help file? The SYS.HELP file or the HELP file for the account?

If the former some one could email you a copy of the 2.1 SYS.HELP file, you could just clear the existing one and copy the backup into it.

If the latter, you might be in a pickle because the account HELP file will contain the application specific helps that may be Gone ForEver (which some wag on CompuServe swears GFE stands for). Best you can hope for is to run the DUMP utility repair and check the temporary files to see what can be salvaged.

It is the Main Help file. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone has a copy of it.

Sorry, that is SYS.HELP

I have 2.12 at home. Leave an e-mail address and I'll send you a zipped copy along with installation instructions.

If you're not on version 2.12, I suggest downloading the update files from the Demo & Download section. You have to unzip them to floppies to install them though. You can check your version by typing "WHO" at TCL. The update may add items to your SYS.HELP file but it doesn't include the whole file.

Thank you very much for your help.

I don't know if you have tried to send a copy of sys.help file or not, but I have not received it yet. I would really appreaciate it if I could get a copy. I am in the process of moving my AREV 2.12 5 user network app to NT using the NT service and it would be nice to fix some of the problems with the help files at the same time.

Thanks

Sorry, I missed your reply with the e-mail address. I'll zip it up and send it right away.

Okay, it's on the way attached as arev_212_sys_help.zip. Let me know if you have problems receiving the binary attachment.

Instructions to install:

1) Create a temp directory (e.g. c:\syshelp)

2) Unzip the Arev files there

3) Start ARev (any account is ok, SYSPROG preferred)from TCL

4) ATTACH C:\SYSHELP

5) COPY SYS.HELP1 * TO:(SYS.HELP (O

That should do it. Make sure there are no GFEs in SYS.HELP beforehand. You can always use the FILE COPY from the FILE menu with an overwrite option. Make sure the SYS.HELP is bound to the ACCOUNT GLOBAL.
