I inherited a client which is running ARev 3.12 and ARev 1.16. Actually I almost had them as a client 5-6 years ago and they were running 2.x as well as 3.0x also but when I looked at the source code and some of the system design I went running off screaming into the darkness…

Why are they still running 1.16? Well the major portion of their 'mission critical' app (remember that buzzword?) was developed in Rev G and ported to Advanced Revelation 1.x using the Rev G compatibility feature of ARev 1.x (RDesign on ARev).

I've gotten the 3.12 stuff onto Win98 workstations with the NLM but I can't move the 1.16 as the NLM is only supported under 2.0x or higher.

The client is unwilling to spend the money to convert the app to 'pure' ARev (i.e. using Windows vs Entry and Prompter) "If it ain't broke….why break us?" Nor am I all that willing to redesign the app "If it ain't broke…"

However if I had a version of RDesign that was tweaked and compiled to run on at least ARev 2.03 I could get them on the NLM and avoid any diasasters in the making when somebody starts running 1.16 on Windows not to mention the performance boosts.

Would such a thing be possible?

In your dreams! The underlying processes in AREV 2.x or 3.x are so different from 1.x in compatibility mode that it would be a monumentally tedious task (I doubt if your client would pay for that if he won't pay to migrate the app to 2.x or 3.x).

If the app is truly "mission critical" then they should cough up the bucks to make it stable!

I dunno, as long as INVERT.ALL AND RTP22 works, what more do you need?

I know there are 'backchannel' versions of RDesign the were recompiled to run under 2.x but I'd rather get it from RTI to avoid licensing issues.

Of course one my never know what my turn up in the dropbox on my iDrive account :-)

I don't see why it would be an issue. Only real difference is the file handle and MFS layer, and I don't think either of these would have an affect. Don't see why it wouldn't continue to work after an upgrade.

I seem to recall way back when 2.00 came out and I upgraded my 1.1x with the RDesign emulator installed it deleted the object code and the add-on was not an option in v2.00. As I recall when I copied over the object code it would blow up with a variety of errors VNAZU etc…

I'll have to unearth a working 360KB floppy and try it again. I don't think I have my v1.0 discs any longer though.
