We are using AREV 3.X indirectly using a Payroll System. The application is located on a MS NT 4.0 server. The users are accessing using W95, NW Client 32 v2.2, and MS Network Client to access our network. We connect the user to NT using a drive mapping directly to NT. Following an application error within the app using AREV, the access to the NT server will decrease drastically. To reestablish the network response for this user must disconnect drive mapping, reboot PC, and reestablish drive letter.

Can you provide any assistance to resolving this issue?

We are only experiencing this for the application running AREV3.x, all other apps in this environment are working correctly. We are running Linear Hash on the NT server.

Help!!!

Cathy,

First of all, you mention that you are running Novell's client. Is this necessary? You don't mention any other Novell factors in your network so assuming there is none, or little need, I'd remove the Novell client and any IPX protocols on the workstations.

Perhaps the application error you mention is part of the problem. Could you post the error and when and why it may occur?

You may want to check this thread out which will help out any periodic slowdowns in environments similar to yours.

Stephen - check whether the link is accessible by visitors - I get a token access box with your link (username & password).

Cathy,

The message did seem confused - it would seem that there are both Netware and NT servers in your environment - is this the case?

Steve,

Here are some tips to speed up the NT Service: It is important that the server be up when the workstations reboot, and that the workstations are not logged into the server at the time of reboot. 1a) If you have a DOS FAT formatted hardrive: Check the "files= parameter in all workstations config.sys files. The number of files should be over 100. Try using "files=101". 1b) If you have a Windows NT NTFS formatted hardrive: Check the "files= parameter in all workstations config.NT files. The number of files should be over 100. Try using "files=101". 2) Log out all users and stop the service (lhsrvc stop). Remove the service (lhsrvc remove). Recreate the service (lhsrvc create). 3) Unmap all of the workstations from the server. 4) Reboot the server. 5) Reboot the workstations. 6) Remap the workstations to the server. 7) Launch your application. This usually will fix most of the NT server slowdowns.

Stephen,

Thanks for sharing that detail with us. Many are anxious for performance under NT.

If you are getting a lot of GFEs or other major errors in AREV, you might check for these things (besides the good suggestions of others):

1) *ALL* machines should have WRITE BEHIND CACHING turned off except

for the server.

2) *ALL* machines should map to EXACTLY the same drive and path.

ie. F:\AREV in the shortcut. I'm not sure if this could cause a disconnect of the machine to the server; I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know.

3) For speed considerations, look for the shortcut MISC tab and move the slider on IDLE SENSITIVITY to LOW - play with this as it dramatically affects all other aspects of that machine's performance.

– Also check in AREV (on each machine) for the YIELD TIME TO WINDOWS box to either be YES or NO depending on how much speed you need. I usually set it to NO and adjust the speed with the MISC tab.

I have some other suggestions on my site - check the msg I posted.
