I've been working with OI 8.0.7. The Arev32 conversion wizard seemed to do ok, outside of not recognizing Rlist statements that use periods (not underscores). OpenEngine showed a max of 2 users, which allowed me to run Arev32 (which takes up a seat in itself).

I just ran the 9.0 upgrade to hopefully handle the periods issue. Now the Arev32 conversion crashes with a "Sys1301" error about a bad VOC item (never happened before). OpenEngine shows a max of 1 user, and I cannot run Arev32 at all.

Anyone else having issues like these? Any words of wisdom/workarounds?

One more intriguing fact.. after recompiling the programs in the Arev32 conversion process, my source code is Gone! In place of the source, I have a record called "@":program name, which looks like a copy of the "*":program name record.

Glad I was working on a copy!!

Removal of periods (replaced with underscores) was a requirement around AREV 3.12 in 1993 (if I recall) - at the time migration to OI was initially happening. I think the precept was that object orientation used periods, as did VB and Javascript and Java and C++ and Delphi etc etc. There may have been some indexing reasons also. This doesn't mean your AREV app will fail with periods, but because the 32 bit world adopts the underscore convention, that's something you should manually convert to prior to running the conversion utility.

Suggest you go down this path before attempting any 32 bit conversions.

Actually, RTI recommended converting dots to underscores as part of the 2.1 upgrade back in 1991 or so. My, how the time flies…I was reminiscing as I typed this….how things have changed…

I didn't code it this way.. I'm just converting it..

When we started looking into Arev32, Bob Catalano told us that the conversion wizard would enable our app to run with the dots. Part of the conversion process involves converting dots to underscores. And the v.9 Readme file says that one of the things addressed by v.9 was using dots in Rlist statements.

Are you saying that there's no way to run this with the dots?

Well you'd have to speak with Bob, I guess.

You've had fair advice from Aaron - who handled the 3.12 upgrade and release for Revelation many moons ago.

I've always taken the view that field names can occur in RLIST statements, VOC statements, RBASIC programs, indexes, menus, screens, reports, program variables, common blocks, insert libraries (ie. lots of places) and therefore should be upgraded manually to ensure you have converted them all.

Eric,

I agree that having the dots converted first would be optimal. Unfortunately my client is using an Arev 2.12 system with dots everywhere. The Arev32 propaganda says that it will handle the dots. Doing any kind of pre-conversion conversion would result in hours and hours of downtime for a system that has to run 24/7/365.

Just not sure why things aren't working as advertized.

Michael-

Two Things:

1 - if you ask these questions in the Worls section I suspect you'll get more, better, answers.

2 - The converter does convert dots to underscores if you'd like. I've done it many times, so something is wrong. Give us a call on Monday at (800) 262 4747.

Thanks-

Mike

Thanks, Mike.. I'll definitely call on Monday. When I run the Arev32 conversion, I have the options checked to change dots to underscores. All the converted windows seem to run ok, but Rlist queries that contain dots are bombing out.

Thanks for your attention!

Michael

There is a way, as Mike says, give them a call. The converter is very particular, by design, so it doesn't willy-nilly go and start swapping things and changing things. You have to specifically state what files and fields and programs and basically everything to convert. It's a bit tough going the first time through, but once you get it down, the second conversion is a snap.

As for my general 2.1 comment, I was referring to the mention that RTI started recommending swapping the dots to underscores with the release of ARev 3.1. It was actually 2.1x. a good 3 years prior, so sometime in or about 1990.

In general, RevSoft has done a pretty good job making the system 3.12 (and by extension, 2.12) compatible in syntax and structure. Coding around the coded dot/underscore limitations and issues isn't an easy task. The few glitches are pretty easy to work around, especially considering it's making what's basically a 20 year old app run in a whole new technology set.
