Clutching at straws here!

With Arev V3.12 under NT and with Win 95

clients …..

What should the 'FILES= element in any station

config.sys file be set to?

We have had conflicting information.

Some say 60, others say 255, others say NO

WAY set to 255, other say 150, others say 100!

Should it be set at the station at all?

What should it be to have a stable environment

with particular reference to running under NT

and where should it be established?

Would really appreciate some guidance.

FILES=200 is where you should be. This allows DOS to have a good amount of file handles without stripping them all from windows (what 255 might do)

People say different values because different combinations of workstation and network operating systems require different values.

In your case, you should sit somewhere between 180 and 220 or so. Actual values depend on what is running. As they say, your milage may vary.

You might want to look at the Win95 resource book and various NT resource books.

And, incidentally, never use 255.
