I have a machine that has expanded memory which shows only extended memory when i do MEM /C (WinXP).

In doing a MEM /c , what should you look for to check if expanded memory is available.

A machine is being built off-site for a client, and I need some way of telling tech people who have never heard of "Expanded memory" , how to check if it is available. I have forwarded on all the hints at enabling expanded memory that I could find here.

You don't suppose that your offsite "techs" have ever put EXPANDED into the Windows help Index tab Search field?

Start-Help-Index-"Expanded"

or else

Start-run-notepad c:\windows\system32\config.nt

Look at the annotation (if any) - similar to:

[size=1]

REM EMM

REM You can use EMM command line to configure EMM(Expanded Memory Manager).

REM The syntax is:

REM

REM EMM=A=AltRegSets B=BaseSegment RAM

REM

REM AltRegSets

REM specifies the total Alternative Mapping Register Sets you

REM want the system to support. 1
