Has anyone had experience in printing through a networked printer connected to the network via a TCP/IP connection. We are using XP. Thanks for any help.

And one thing to keep in mind is a permissions "oddity" with Windows XP. If a PC has a physical LPT1, then you must have Administrator privileges to capture (NET USE) a network printer to an LPT device. If the users do not need a physical LPT1, and you do not want them to have administrator privileges on their local machine, then you can disable the LPT1 port in the BIOS.

If there is no physical LPT1, printer queues can be captured without needing administrator privileges.

There are articles in the Microsoft Knowledgebase about this issue.

First off thanks to those that have tried to help.

I am however still not having much luck with the net use command. Possibly the lack of success may be due to the fact the the network I am working on is Novell 3.2 and it does not support the TCP/IP protocol.

When I issue the command;

net use lpt1: /delete

I get; The network connection could not be found.

When I issue the command;

net use

The only network component that is reported is given with this information;

Status: blank

Local: F: (which is the drive mapped to the server though XP)

Remote: \\AVSTA3\SYS

Network: NetWare Services

I just do not see the connection in the communication between the server and the workstation running XP using the TCP protocol. Maybe there is something I am just not understanding.

Thanks for any help.

Is there an extended form of the capture command that will allow the mapping of LPT1 to an IP address?

I might be missing something here, but I think you will have a problem with NET USE when the printer isn't set up on at least some "server". This won't likely be Novell 3.xx (IPX).

Again, sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but on XP workstation…

Printers And Faxes…Add Printer…Local Printer…Create A New Port Type Of Port Standard TCP/IP Port…Port Name (DNS or dotted IP address)…and in my case with a JetDirect port it allows the port to be selected (in the case of 3 port JetDirect servers)… and it creates a RAW port 9100 on the IP address specified, then steps through the rest of the Add Printer wizard (printer driver selection, etc).

At this point you can share the printer added, and NET USE LPTx \\workstationname\sharename for LPTx emulation for DOS apps, keeping in mind the LPT1 limitation already mentioned.

I agree that the problem is likely Novell 3.2 running IPX and not TCP. I am installing a new Netware Server 6.5 at the moment and I suspect I will be able to get it to work once this is done. Thanks again for your help, I will keep you posted.
