Linux with Samba - which network driver? (OpenInsight Specific)

I have a client who runs a OI 3.3 multi-user app on a system with a Linux server, and Samba to emulate an NT server. (The Samba version is 1.9.18P8.) Which network driver should he use? He's found out by himself that NPP doesn't work. The second user doesn't even get a chance to log in. Byte-range Locking so far seems to work, but he's not really taken it out on the road yet.

Additional info: It turns out my client hadn't tested his system much at all. I thought he'd already done some simple testing like accessing the same row from to workstations. He'd not. He now reports that when two users open the same row, there's no warning for the second user, and they can both change and write back the row. So locking isn't working. The app has the default locking in its windows, so normally locking should work.
But I don't know enough to tell if he should use a different network driver, or if there is no driver that fits his configuration, or perhaps if the driver's allright but he's set up his network all wrong. - But maybe you do.

Øystein,
We don't have this information, but my laptop is a dual-boot Win95/Linux (Red Hat 5.0). I'll set up the Samba support and see if I'm getting the same problems and/or what to do about it.
I'll hopefully have an answer for you by tomorrow, I'm not sure if I will need to do any kernel tweaking/untweaking on my system.

Scott,
Thank you very much indeed for looking into this. I look forward to receiving your report.

Scott,
Did you find out anything about this issue?

Scott,
Please could I have a sign of life? If it's turned out you haven't got the time to help me on this, I'd rather know it so I can advice the user to find a different server/network solution.

Oystein,
I know Scott was doing some testing with OpenInsight and Linux (as a file server). I don't know if he is done yet.

Oystein,
Sorry for the delay, I was and still am doing some test scenarios for it, but I haven't had time to finish them (which I was hoping to do before posting). Here's what I've found so far:
- Using the NPP with Arev worked fine; I logged in a pair of users and locking worked normally
- Using OI with the NPP gave me problems; I could not log a second user in when using the All Networks protocol–I'm not sure why I'm getting this problem; nor do I think it should be happening. Single-user worked fine, but that doesn't solve the problem.
I noticed that when using samba, and copying entire subdirectories over, that the permissions did not include write permissions. But fixing that didn't fix the problem.
Also, the systems I was using for my testing (two Pentium 200's with quick hard drives) were performing much more slowly than I expected. It was definitely slower than a Win95 peer to peer.
As of right now (among other things), I'm trying to figure out why I cannot log in more than a single user to OI, and also diagnose these speed troubles (there may have simply been a lot of net traffic that day I ran the tests?).
At any rate, I'm going to try to finish up some loose ends that I have here today in the next few hours and give the OI-Linux stuff another shot before I leave. If I make any progress on it at all, I'll let you know.
I have some other information that might be of interest: the latest version of the jLH will be 100% Java. I'll definitely be testing that out as well.

Any progress?
If my client wants to take his problem to a Samba discussion list - what should he tell them about OI? (I'm unsure about how much this is a problem with OI or something of a more general nature.)

Scott,
My client's studied the Samba docs and now he wants to know if OI (its network drivers) uses "opportunistic locking". And he'd like to know what "locking" parameters he should set in smb.conf.

I've had good results running OI on Linux with Mamba.
I saw Charlie Brown doing a mamba once, with Pepermint Patty. Violet was in the corner, hidding. In fact, one might say she was shrinking.
Snoopy and Woodstock once did a tango, in Paris. That one was my one of my favorites. Ma Cheri, Charlie Brown. We can't forget the SQL, Ooh La La, Charlie Brown. And of course, the blockbuster hits, It hurts when I pee, Charlie Brown and Oh My Papa, Charlie Brown.

Sure! It helps a lot! Thank you! It helps reminding me I just might've got help with this now. I say "might" because I haven't heard from my client yet to see if the advice works. But the guy with the advice is Johan Liebenberg of Gnu Wave Data Services - sorry, New Wave Data Services - South Africa, who told me "There are problems with 'byte-range locking' in older versions of Samba but the latest version 1.9.18P10 you can get from http://samba.anu.edu.au/samba/samba.html will fix this problem. Use the standard driver for DOS, Win95 network driver in Rev/OI. We are currently testing the new release with RevG. which works perfectly, but any later version should work the same…"

The same driver you use when you run on a NT network.

I recall a while ago (right here in fact), you mentioning that you were working on an internal document (to be released to the public) for getting jLH working over Linux. How's this coming along?

Just discovered this thread.
Have you been able to get OI to run on a LINUX network.
What special requirements are there. Do you need NT service or just the NPP (OI built in).
