I recently deployed an OI application. I used (temporarily) my copy of oengine.exe to reattach some tables that I forgot to deploy and then replaced the engine with the deployment version of OENGINE.EXE.

I transferred the deployed application to a novell server. I installed the Revelation NLM and then installed a 5 user SDK.

So far, I am only able to use the networked application from my PC (the one with the development version of OI on it). From that workstation, everything is fine. On a different workstation, the main form window pops up, but when any other data-bound form is accessed I hear the all to familiar error 'ping'. It acts as if the tables are not attached.

On another workstation, I get the following message: 'Unable to find CTL3D.DLL. This file is required to run OINSIGHT.EXE.' Ironically, this file IS on the workstation.

Am I missing something big about LAN enabling a deployed OI application? To my understanding, I simply make shortcuts that point to the OINSIGHT.EXE file on the network server.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Greg,

It sounds like you need to run the "Client Install" portion of the OpenInsight setup on each workstation.

Cameron,

You're right about the client install, but I'm still having problems running the deployed application.

I installed the client on one of the workstations and I created a shortcut to the OINSIGHT.EXE file on the server. When I dbl-click the shortcut, OI starts, and then asks for a l/p.

Whenever I try to go to a form with databound controls, I still get the windows error 'ping'. It's as if it can't find the .DICT for the table that the form is bound to. I can use lb.exe and see that that the tables are all attached, however.

Am I incorrect in creating a shortcut to the OINSIGHT.EXE file on the server? I should be able to get this to work on a novell server with or without the NLM, correct? Using the appropriate network driver of course.

Thanks,

Greg,

If you get that "ping" (a beep, right?) then check the System Monitor for an error message. Alternatively, see if you can see a problem if you get an engine log.

Greg,

You can also get a beep if the debugger is disabled and something happens to invoke the debugger.

Cameron,

Maybe I need to backup and give you some more information on what I am doing here. (I'm using OI 3.7, by the way.)

I can deploy my application – that is no problem. I can get my promoted events to work by doing an upgrade deployment and then doing an RDKINSTALL to the path that I deployed the application to.

Here is my first problem:

The deployed application doesn't contain all the relational indexes that it should.

My fix to this was to temporarily install my development version of OENGINE.EXE to the deployment directory, remove all the tables that were deployed, and reattach the volume that contains the tables as well as the indexes.

This works fine as long as it is on my PC (the one that I do the development on). When I move the deployed directory to a novell server and then try to run the application from a workstation (having already installed the client on the workstation),the indexes don't work.

What am I doing wrong here?

I've seen this problem crop up before in an earlier version. To my knowledge, it hasn't been mentioned with OI 3.7, though. I'll have to set up a test environment to see if I can reproduce that error with 3.7 as well. As for now, you're using the advised workaround that tech support used for earlier versions of OI4WG.

Sounds like the pathname to the attached table was hardwired. I know that this happens for a fact if you use database manager. Try instead running an attach_table command from the system monitor or the system editor. Use relative pathnames, like ".\datavol" (etc..) If that doesn't work, you could always set it up on your local machine, and then put it up on the network and re-attach the tables and re-define the dbt. That would set it up to use the server pathnames. In that scenario, all the clients would need the same drive letter mapping to the server, of course.

Hope this helps,

Scott
