I have developed and used an AREV 2.1 application for our office over the past 6 years, using a single user version and DOS based PC. I love AREV, it's great. Now I think I must go to multi-user and WINDOWS (ugh). That scares me. Just running my single user version under WINDOWS and the printing control is lost. What do I need to do to convert?

Really, nothing. As a DOS application, AREV should run quite nicely in Win95. Just set up your links and let it fly.

As a DOS application, you are not using Windows to print, you're using AREV printer controls. Check these.

However, a printer must exist in Windows (usually a generic will do). When you print, sometimes it takes a while for printer to start. That's the spooler. Check your spooler settings in the properties for the active printer. Play with it a bit. Disable the spooler and see if it works. This is for local printing. If you are trying to print to a network printer, then you need to capture it and point it to the correct device.

Win95, although scary, offers something that I have waited a long time for; multi-tasking, well its own version anyway. It allows you to have several tasks, including a DOS ap, operating at the same time. Now you'll be able to run an AREV report, work a Word document, and play solittaire at the same time. Running in background can be helpful.

Much luck,
