I notice that in the OI System Editor when a line in a record becomes longer than 104 characters, it wraps down to the next line. Hopefully this is just for viewing and the end of the long line is not really truncated and re-inserted as a new line in the record.

First, is my assumption true and the record has not been modified? And second, is there any way of turning off this line-wrap feature? If not, are there alternative editors available to display the records.

Thanks,

Ours wraps at 1025 and yes it does affect the data.

Are you using a very large font?

Thanks for your response. I mis-read the column position. I am actually wrapping with 1140 characters. The font is a normal 10-point Courier.

So, the System editor has this problem. How can I get around the problem. We will have strings in a particular data field (i.e. "column") of a data record (i.e. "row") of a data file (i.e. "table") which may have several thousand characters.

You mentioned that YES it does change the data. I assume by moving the truncated piece down to the next field thereby shifting everything down one (or two or three, etc. fields.) If this is true then the OI system editor not only sucks, it is dangerous!

Well, I certainly agree, I should not use the OI system editor at least with records holding long strings in a field. Are there any other OI issues with long strings?

Thanks

Depends on the OS. Size of records editable in system editor varies. Up until latest OICGI big problems with web publishing any large rows. Otherwise fine!

Tom ..

I have had a similar problem when trying to initialize long strings in an R/BASIC program. I had to resort to two solutions:

1. Use concatination to build up the variables out of smaller segments and then stuff it into the place it belongs.

2. Store the long string in a record on disk and then read it at run-time to initialize the strings.

You can edit with Notepad and then copy the data to OI andhand-compile the code from the Exec Line..giant PITA.
