I put in a question a few days ago about setting up a dedicated indexer on an AREV 3.12 system. Egbert Poell was kind enough to answer and pointed me to the FAQ in the Knowledge Base. I found it (and a couple of interesting tid bit along the way that I'll have to read later) and found the section that referenced the Dedicated Indexer. Unfortunetly it is a bit short on detail. I found where I would set the "Update Index Before Filter" flag to NO within the application.

What I can't seem to fathom at the moment is where to "create an application user called INDEXER". I'm not use if the application user by the name of INDEXER is supposed to be created within each application or created within the SYSPROG. Also, I haven't found any place to "turn on background indexing for this user only.".
I've got a dollar, can anyone tell me were I can buy a clue to this problem?

Thank You,

Michael Slack

Actually, beleive it or not, it's in the docs.

If you go through the menu structures, you'll find the environmental records. In there is Workstation or Hardware. In one of them (pretty sure it's Hardware) you'll find two fields, Background Update Time and Time before Delay. Again, I can't think of the wordings since I don't have a copy. But, they should be set to 60 30, I think that's the default.

Anyway, what you need to do is set up INI files, since this information is stored there. By default, the system uses AREVC.INI and AREVM.INI (color and monochrome). Before running ARev, you'll need to SET AREV=INDEXER.INI. This will use the INDEXER.INI.

When the indexer logs in, change the environment to 10 and 10 or 5 and 5. For the other stations, set to 0 and 0.

It's late (sorta) so if this isn't clear, I'll try again.

Within an application, create a user called INDY (or whatever.) From sysprog, all this user to index (hardware option off menus) and all others have indexing turned off. I haven't done this for some time, but there are two indexing values: time between checks and time before 1st check (I think). Set the former to zero and you have turned off indexing.

The easy way to do this is to have 2 .ini files. The standard .ini (AREVC.INI) should have the indexing turned off. Create a separate .ini file for the INDY user (SF1 at prompt) and set the Indy machines environment in the autoexec.bat with the Set Arev=INDY.INI statement.

Mike,

I left you a message on your 07/31/98 posting of this request - offering to send you instructions on how to create a dedicated indexer. If you do not respond, I'll assume you've already taken care of the issue.

Ed Johnson
