We run a 24/7 operation and use Legato(V 7.1) and OFM (Open File Manager V9.1) to backup our arev system everynight. Our Novell server is 6.0 and we are running Arev 2.12. Everynight when the backup is running our night staff may run into a "Fatal Error Reading file" and the "file is a Read-Only file" when trying to update a record. We will get the same message on our dedicated indexer machine nightly. We have contacted Legato and they suspect it is a issue between Netware 6 file systems and Arev. Has anyone encounter this issue? We only encountered this problem after we upgraded to Novell 6 from Novell 4.12. All the files in question are flagged to Share/Read Write.

It might be the case that the backup software temporarily makes the file read-only during the copy to prevent it from being corrupted during backup. This used to be the case with several server-based backups and Netware 5.x. It inevitably caused an Indexer to cough if the !file was being manipulated. I'm not sure if it's a Netware 6.x issue. Maybe someone else does, though.

But isn't Open File Manager supposed to handle that transparently?

You may have to get a version specific to Netware 6. See http://www.logon-int.com/NewsDealsdetail.asp?sNDID=118&NorD=N

Jim,

You might want to use "XCOPY" (msdos command) to copy the items to be backed up, then use your backup software.

This will avoid sharing conflicts. Use options that will not reset the archive bit. That way the copy will not need to have exclusive access to the actual files.

Then second you can use your backup software to backup the copy. That way your backup software will not compete for any type of exclusive access with your active users.

Check out the "/e/h/k" options of "XCOPY".

Thanks for all the feedback. Legato got us to unload the OFM and use Snapback instead, but it encountered the same problems. This leads me to believe it may be a Novell 6 issue. Strange it did not affect the files which were already opened but only those that were closed and then opened by an application during the backup. Version 9.1 is newest version of OFM. We can try do the Xcopy & backup, but doesn't Xcopy come up with an error when the file is being used?. Plus Arev Database is about 8 Gigs and I recall Xcopy can take a while.
