I have received a ViP file from a foreign party. Upon execution I get Runtime Error 5661. I do have Lotus installed, using default path, etc. I am running WinNT, so do not have an autoexec.bat, but I have set c:\notes in my environment path. The ViP file is in c:\notes\data. Any suggestions?

Hello Calie,
Runtime Error 5661 : Not installed notes or not specified in Path error is generated because ViP cannot locate the Notes DLL files it needs to access Notes Databases.
To properly set the notes path in WinNT4.0 select start, settings, control panel, system, environment, user variables, path, "C:\notes", set and apply.
Next you need to reboot your workstation.
Then select start, run, command, type "path" and hit the enter key.
"C:\notes" must be in the path for ViP to connect to any notes databases.
If this is OK, then select start, run, regedit, hkey_local_machine, software, lotus, notes, 4.0. Does Path say "C:\notes".
If it does not, then your notes installion has been moved, copied or corrupted. The registry setting should be the same path as from the dos prompt.
For 32 bit ViP you will need 32 bit notes install on 32 operating system
This means that you should have the NNotes.dll file in his notes directory.
If you have _notes.dll file in his notes directory…this means that the 16 bit install of notes is installed on your machine.
Therefore, you will have to uninstall 16 bit notes and install 32 bit notes locally.
Here are some other questions …
1. Can you connect to the server and nsf file from within Notes?
If not, there maybe network connection issues. Do you have the correct ports enabled in Notes.ini? Ex. TCP/IP, SPX …
2. Do you have multiple versions of Notes installed on the machine? If so, whenever you try to run two different Notes versions with ViP on Windows, you probably will have these problems.
Also be careful that you don't have NOTES.INI in the WINDOWS directory. It should only be in the local Notes directory, and should not be pointing to a notes.ini file located on a network drive or a network install of notes. This is not supported.
As to what constitutes the proper path, this is the rule:
If you are running ViP 16-bit, then
1) if _NOTES.DLL is found in the Notes path, then Notes V4 16-bit will be used;
2) if not, then if _SDK.DLL is found in the Notes path, then Notes V3 will be used; otherwise an error.
If you ar running ViP2.x 32-bit, then
1) if NNOTES.DLL is found in the Notes path, then Notes V4 32-bit will be used; otherwise an error.
Hope this helps,
