To all:

I've been assigned to update and enhance the OI online help and documentation. I'm looking for any and all suggestions – errors, omissions, topics you would like to see included, tips and techniques, etc. Be as specific or as general as you want. I want to create a help system and documentation set that we can all be proud of and that will help make OI the best it can be.

Send your suggestions to ikrakow_1999@yahoo.com. If you want to mail me, my address is:

Hey Ira - good to see you again! Seems like only yesterday that you and Dave extended my subscription by six months for the parallel port tip… sheesh!

Anyway good luck on your new endeavour - as we think of stuff we'll be sure to let you know!

Ira,

I assume you don't start from scratch. I'd hate to spend a lot of work coming up with suggestions you've already got.

You'll open the floodgates! There's lots not documented in the current online help - not least lots of very useful routines in SYSOBJ. Also lots of topics - e.g. promoted window events.

Maybe you should negotiate with AMcA to include a lot of his invaluable material from SENL? But, please, not the jokes!

I look forward to the result. It sounds just what we need.

Dear Ira and Revelation,

Perhaps if you set up a "beta" testing for this new help file that would help us to contribute. As has been mentioned already, it is hard to know what to recommend without knowing what has already been covered.

Don (the other one), I concur completely. I'm sure there is a wealth of info out there .. sitting in code snippets, notepad stuff, etc. It would be grand to be able to take advantage of this (including a few more examples).

Ira,

What I referred to in my posting is the work the new Revelation themselves started last year. I assume you use what got collected then as a starting point now.

But here are a few ideas:

What I something miss in the programming reference is a thematic approach to the matter.

E.g, everything about searching. Something to throw light into that messy attic of tools. Btree.Extract versus Rlist versus etc. Indexed versus unindexed. Efficiency considerations. Caveats. Etc.

E.g, everything about MDI programming.

The reference should also contain articles on the various controls.

And articles must be as honest and complete as possible. An article about the edit table should list all the limitations and weaknesses and peculiar features of this control, along with workarounds and hints.

The reference can't contain everything, so must have lots of pointers to other docs.

And I think you'll get more feedback if you start asking for comments on specific subjects, e.g searching, MDI programming, edit tables.
