From my testing it would appear that 2 dedicated indexers are better than one. It would seem that when each each 'wakes' up and checks the 0 record in the ! (bang) file it will share the load.

Is this in fact the case? And, if so, are 4 better than 2?

We have an accounting process in our product that for our biggest client will need to update indexes for 40 clients and potentially 1mil. check records. This process is run at least once a week and sometimes up to 3 and when it is done many of there (200+) users are locked out of the system.

I am wondering if it is because all of the servers resources are spent 'chattering' with the indexers. I have suggested that they

try connecting the indexers directly to the server via a cross-over cable to separate NIC's.

Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions? TIA

Multiple indexers will share the load between them. Having them on their own NIC sub net is a good idea.
