This is a note to all OI/Arev users that are looking to build Java-based applications today using their existing environment as a back-end.
InsiTech Group has just released their state-of-the-art Java/XML based product called InsiTech ProJect. ProJect is a Java 1.3 level product that you can use to access your OI data, and as a base for developing your 32bit Java applications as extensions to your OI apps or independently. ProJect can integrate with standard GUI Java development tools (Ex: Sun's Forte, JBuilder, etc.) as well as with LiveWater/jRev when it is released.
ProJect is a set of 100% pure Java controls that access Arev/OI data through XML. The technology allows the same screen to be run on a LAN, WAN, Intranet, Internet, which is not the case with regular JDBC-enabled controls. ProJect consists of data-enabled controls on the front end and database specific ( OI in this case) back-ends. With ProJect, you can create database-enabled Java screens without a lot of code, quickly and easily, and in mostly the same manner as OI/ARev.
Our tool (InsiTech ProJect) accesses the data through a web server and uses XML as the mode of communications between client and server. Access to linear hash is currently done through the OICGI gateway, with future plans expand beyond it to multithreaded access to the linear hash data. Future releases of ProJect will add access to Oracle/MS SQL/Access/etc, therefore giving developers the freedom to choose between database back-ends without changing the developed Java screens.
We developed ProJect with the goal of making the development of data-enabled screens in Java straight forward, and based on setting properties ( table name, column name, etc) rather than writing reams of code. On the front end we have created Java controls that have the Arev/OI feel( reads on lostfocus of primary key, pre/post focus events, multivalued or relational db access, variable length fields, etc.). Since everything is pure Java, developers can integrate these controls in their favorite Java development environment (Sun's Forte, Livewater/jRev, Visual Cafe, etc) and then drag and drop the controls to create forms.

On the site you will find a description of ProJect's capabilities, purchase information and documentation and a tutorial showing you how easy it is to setup and connect to your existing OI database.
