Until a few days ago my Openinsight development and its apps ran perfectly on my single user Win98 SE workstation.

Now, when loaded it hangs, often crashing the system. When I pull up Taskmanager and terminate Oengine (Not Responding) I get the message, "OpenInsight bootup failed."

Or, sometimes OI will load and run allowing access to my forms, menus and data. This eratic behaviour is driving me nuts.

I do not recall any recent installs which could cause this problem.

OI Version is 3.6

My AREV 3.12 access the data and reports no problems with LH files.

Win 98se (with most of the current patches.)

The main app is my custom Job Costing, Sales and Invoicing.

It's getting very difficult to send out statements and invoices so ANY help is really welcome.

Thanks

Dean,

My notes say a client of mine got Bootup Failure with an OI 3.6.1 app on Win98 when using Active Desktop.

No! I don't use and am not an Active Deaktop fan. Wish it was that simple.

Dean,

Not a fan either.

Didn't believe it was too likely to be the cause, but at least changing to AD is a change that isn't a new program installed, so one might not think it relevant.

Have you searched this site? Search for "bootup failed" or "boot up failed" to catch everything.

I believe most problems with this message have been on networked systems, but not all.

I continue to search for a solution. I have experimented with using varsious versions of CTL3D.DLL.

There are several copies on my system. Version 2.05.0 (21k) in the Oinsight directory, and version 2.31 (27k) in Windows, System and the Quicken folders.

Using 2.05.0, in Oinsight the program will load, but very, very slowly. I remain stumped and still need advice.

Dean,

(If you did that search I suggested and looked through all the postings, this posting doesn't have any new info for you.)

- The same dll in two places in different versions (in OI revboot folder versus e.g windows system folder) might cause this problem it seems. But perhaps it's a different dll than ctl3d.

- Does this posting from Aaron contain any useful info?

- Also check the date (year) on your computer. Once upon a time several users got the bootup failed message because their year went 100 years off.

Well .. I'll grasp at a few straws:

1. Do you have an e-mail client running on the disktop all the time? Outlook, etc. I've seen situations where this will cause resources to become sufficiently depleted that somethings behave strangely.

2. Is the machine running Win98-SE with more than 256 MB of memory. There are issues with this that can cause the swap file to consume all available memory.

3. Do you have a virus scanner running? If so, does it bypass .LK and .OV files? There have been issues with this, too.

4. Have you tried re-installing Windows on top of itself? Sometimes this fixes some strange behavior.

5. Have you cleaned out all the "junk" files in Windows?

6. Is it possible when the app was moved to the local drive that there are pointers hanging around that point to the network drive that it was installed on before (perhaps Indexing or a .DBT file)?

Because of never ending security issues with Outlook and IE, I began using Mozilla and its mail client some months ago. Mozilla offers a "Quickload" option, meaning part of it stays in memory as a Tray icon.

Same weird OI thing happens when Mozilla is unloaded.

I use Norton AV, which I suspect may have created the problem with one of its LiveUpdates. I disable auto protect it prior to loading OI.

I frequently zap the system junk files and have added no new or mapped drives.

I don't want to reinstall Win98Se, as I am planning to move to XP pro very soon.

This system has always had 256 MB of memory, but it caused no prior problems with OI.

Recently, (for whatever reason) OI became somewhat more stable, meaning it doesn't lock up the system. OI will load, but it is verrrrrrrrry slow. After I starting OI, if I CTL-ALT-DEL and bring up and then cancel Task Manager, OI, pops right up.

I'm still stumped. Thanks, to all for the suggestions.
