I have a customer who has a NT network and his workstations are Windows 98. They are running the NT service and the workstations have the NPP installed. The workstations are running very slow and sluggish. If we rebuild the indexes things seem to move along great.

What should I be looking for?

Thanks for all your help

A Responsive and Stable AHM on NT

Server

Install the Linear Hash service from Advanced Revelation
Create a REVPARAM file in all directories of Arev containing SERVERONLY=TRUE
All Arev files should have the ownership of ADMIN
Do not use a screen saver on the server.
Service Pack 4 fixes some slow printer issues

Protocols

Netbeui may be faster than TCP/IP
Stack the protocols on the server so TCP/IP is first
Delete protocol IPX/SPX

Files

AREV.EXE should not be read only.
No virus checking on OV files.

Arev

Use /x/m4096 parameters with the Arev command
Remove all QUICKDEXS on system files
EDIT DOS REVBOOT and change 020 to 000 to remove cache

Workstation

      FILES=250 in CONFIG.SYS or CONFIG.NT
Allocate 4096K of expanded (EMS) memory
Make sure your Windows swap file is not on the network
Ensure that Windows 95 workstations are using Service Pack 1 and/or Service Pack 2
If your PC has 16mb of RAM or more, then set PC ROLE to NETWORK SERVER
Do not use FAST-INDEX or FAST-START from Microsoft Office
Remove all unused applications for STARTUP
Use the NT FORCEDOS command
Use a PIF which enables background tasks
Enter a frame type under network properties, do not run on 'Auto'
Disable "Power Save (green)"

After rebuilding, how long does it take for things to get sluggish? Could be a sizelock setting or something in the !files causing slow hasing during transactions.

We had the same problem at client site with a 5 workstations (Win 98) NT Server SP4. The number 1 problem was cheep NIC's. As soon as we replaced them all with 3COM NIC's most of the performance problems were solved. We also found a cable with bad connectors which caused random lockups. Finally, this client (against our recommendations) bought an AMD 450 for a server as well as all the workstations. Our tech thinks that there is some problem with AMD as a server and NT but does not know what it is. It may require special settings… not sure. Hope this helps. Let us know what you find.
