One of our customers is unable to configure a Windows 2000 workstation to use Expanded memory.

They have followed the advice in the various links (ie using the emm386 command etc in config.nt) but still all memory is defined as extended. we suspect that it may be a BIOS problem.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?

I am running win2000 (professional). My CONFIG.NT file is as follows…

   dos=high, umb
   device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
   files=20
   ntcmdprompt

I believe that was the default set up. In my shortcut to "AREV", under the memory tab, all my settings are "AUTO". On the command line, I have the settings "/M4096/X". I get expanded memory.

Maybe you are right about the "BIOS" settings. Maybe expanded memory is blocked in the "BIOS" somehow.

Peter,

For various versions of Windows we have machines which require the "page frame address" switch to be used with the EMM386.EXE command. For instance, this has resolved many problems:

device=c:\windows\emm386.exe 4096 m5

Note, we get a message during boot up with this switch. It's a sort of warning but you can simply hit any key or let it time out and continue anyway.

And, of course there is the infamous Compaq EN model BIOS problem from some time ago (think there was a conflict between the embedded NIC and the EMS manager). There is a patch for this from Compaq.

This bit us about a month ago, after we thought we had rid ourselves of all of these models; someone resurrected one (unpatched). It was at a remote location and we tried a number of things before we remembered this and asked about the workstation.

Just in case this might be your problem…..

Thanks for your help but when the customer tries to load emm386 they get the message: 'EMM386 not installed - protected mode software already running.' and no expanded memory is available.

I have had success creating shortcut on 2k pc's. In my case, I created a shortcut to AREV.EXE. Then pointing to correct drives and folders using the Working and Command lines on the Properties-Programs tab. This new icon's properties have settings for EMX, XMS, etc., much like a 95/98 shortcut. It seems when creating an icon in NT or 2k to a batch file, you are limited in setup. But creating one to an EXE file opens up all the memory settings
