One of our clients, using OI 3.7, are now experiencing these sorts of problems:

Frustratingly, the freezing follows no apparent pattern. Error messages

frequently – but not always – accompany the freeze-ups. Here are a few of

the error messages we have seen:

"The system is dangerously low in resources! Would you like to terminate

the following application? Collection."

"The Engine has terminated unexpectedly. Do you want to close all open

windows?"

"Fatal Runtime Error: Sys1000. Error loading program 'REV_LOADREC'.

"Sys1000. Error loading program '$$$COLLECT*GOTFOCUS*PE_ID.PAGE_1_TAB'"

Although it IS there

"Oengine: This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut

down."

What type of problem do these sorts of error messages indicate and what can we do about them?

Thanks,

Matt.

These are primarily down to running out of resources. The answer is that which we have been discussing with Bil during his sojourn here. I am sure that others will have suggestions though. Try running it on NT or Win2000 to double check this.

Matt,

I concur with Sprezz but I have also seen half of those problems occur with a poor network configuration. You didn't say if this was stand alone or not. As an experiment try using the Byte-Range driver (not All Networks) to see if these errors disappear.

Don,

They are on a six user network running the NT Service, with Win 95/98 clients. Also what I didn't say was that all was OK to begin until recently where one or two machines experienced these problems, and then it slowly grew to other machines as well. I've been trying to figure out what it is that's 'growing' and presumably consuming resources.

Thanks,

Matt.

Hi Andrew & Carl,

Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do with our windows. As you've seen, our app GUI is fairly hungry for resources. What puzzles me is why it has slowly sprung up on the workstations, spreading in a virus-like manner. I wonder what's consuming those resources now that wasn't before.

Sounds like a definite memory leak in Windows. Did you recently add or upgrade anything (such as Outlook, Internet Explorer, or a screen saver) on these workstations? Is there an automated update process (like Symantec's LiveUpdate) that could have done this?

curious! - I'll pass that on, thanks.

Warren,

Apparently nothing has been upgraded or installed since late last year. Data entry has remained at a steady rate. I'll check on the LiveUpdate.

Thanks,

Matt.

Another thing you can do is next time you get the error on a workstation is press ctl-alt-del - this will show you what programs are running/loaded into memory (there is a utility WinTOP you can use too - it either comes with Win95/98 or can be downloaded from Microsoft). Check to see if there is anything unexepected running. The names can often be cryptic so a lot of investigative work is needed.

You can always load the system resource monitor and watch resource usage that way too as you load or switch through the typical workflow of programs.
