Q's Moved to WIN2K Server from Novell 4.11 (AREV Specific)

Our AREV 3.1 application has been running happily on our Novell 4.11 server for years. We've been mandated to move to Windows 2000 Server and our AREV app is no longer happy. The AREV install onto the Windows 2000 Server consisted of copying the files over from the Novell server. Real technical. :) Now when I go to start AREV, I get a username and password prompt, but then get the FS107 error. What needs to be done to make the AREV app work on the Windows 2000 server? Also, should I run the NT 1.5 service on the new server?
Thank you.

Hi Tyler,
I'm just going to list the steps to transfer the app from a Novell to W2K server:
Stop the NLM
Rename the revparm files to xrevparm
copy the app to the W2K server
rename the xrevparm files to revparm
install the W2K Service ver 2.1 or Purchase and install the W2K Service ver 2.1
Hope this helped

And .. do NOT try to run the NLM on a Microsoft server product. You may also want to review the contents of your REVPARAM file. Unless you are using the Win2K service, change the ServerOnly parameter to 0 or delete the line entirely.

Joe,
I'm not seeing any REVPARM or REVPARAM files on the Novell server. Where would they be located?
Can I run my AREV 3.1 app on WIN2K server without the 2.1 service?
thanks again.

Tyler,
The REVPARAM file is user created in each lh volume, ie in every revelation volume. The purpose is to manage / force locking of lh records via the LH service run on the server. A REVPARAM file could be easily created in notepad with content on the first line say
ServerOnly=$True
* Now save file and rename to take the .txt suffix off. There you have a REVPARAM file.
If the Rev application tries to access a LH file in the server but the LH service (or NLM) is down, the system complains. All designed to improve integrity of lh files. Your previous Novell based Rev volumes should have had these REVPARAM files in them to enforce the NLM functioning.
Now if you have not got a REVPARAM file in your LH volumes, the only downside is that when you DO install a Win2000 Service for LH, then integrity will not be complete without creating these files.
Now the first issue of migrating from Novell to Win2000 is that chances are that you will have been using IPX for record locking. Should change driver to IP (I thing all networks driver 1.5 or something like that). Next, you should SERIOUSLY consider installing the Win2000 v2.1 (or later version as and when released) ekse data integrety willbe compromised on a multiuser system.

Thank you Richard. Another question. When I start AREV on the new Win2K server from the command prompt with no arguments, I get the FS176 error, Netware Not Responding. In an earlier post, Joe Doscher said that before I copy the files from the Novell server to the Windows server that I should first unload the NLM. This was not done. Is the AREV NLM named AREV.NLM? Should I unload and re-copy the AREV stuff from the Novell server, or is there another solution to the FS176 error?

Ahhh - forgot the log in as AREV LANPACK and change driver to All Networks Driver. If you do not see All Networks driver then you have not yet installed the Windows 2000 Service (the equivalent of the Novell NLM for Windows systems) and do not have a supported AREV configuration.

Sprezz ..
I don't think he purchased the Win2K service. Just wants to run from desktops to a Win2K server instead of Novell.
Tyler ..
Before you can run from the change in Lan Driver (platform), you'll have to get/install the All Networks Driver from RTI. Then, you login as AREV LANPAK and change your driver. If you get the driver set from RTI, this will be done for you as part of the installation. The All Networks Driver is NOT FREE!!!

Not Free? What the . . . ? JK. Thanks for the info. I'll bite the bullet and get the 2000 service, but will probably be back with more questions. Thanks again. Tyler Bowley.

After updating to AREV 3.12 and Windows 2000 Service, our AREV 3.1 app is now running perfectly on our WIN2K server. Thanks for all of your input!
