I am desperately trying to export data from a very old version of Revelation (1985ish) to a format which I can then import into Access i.e. text or dbase/fox format. According to the manuals there are facilities on the Revelation Utilities disk to do this but these do not appear to work. Is there a way of producing this kind of file from the TCL prompt or using any available utilities I might not be aware of.

One of the simplest ways to export data is to us PDISK and RLIST. Just PDISK filename then run a LIST statement directing output to the printer. PDISK PRN when finished. Now you have a flat ASCII file that you can import. The problems with this technique are that you get headers after every page because the output is designed for the printer. These are easily edited out. Also, formatting of the data is limited to the definitions of the dictionaries in the report, so data may be truncated. OTOH, this may be a good thing.

You can also generate the code for the LIST statement and modify it to eliminate headers if that makes things easier.

If you don't have the utilities, they are also available for download. Just go to the download section of this website. You didn't mention a Revelation version, but by the date I gather it must be Revelation G. That means the Arev utilities will not work for you.

I believe that one of the utilities is Porter in Rev G. This is one that I use to export data a lot. I am using AREV 3.12. Try this one.

I have a client that does this daily from Rev G2 & Arev. the utility

I provided for them creates csv & tab'd types of text files. It also

normalizes allows use of symbolics etc. It works in

conjuction with pdisk to create dos txt files. It is not free so

you may want to look at porter on the original utility floppy

or you may want to check advancedrevelation.com there are some

utilities there

There are free export utilities available but not all will work with the older version of Revelation (Rev G) and none will sort out the multi-value record formats for you.

I have developed and market software to export data from Revelation (all versions) and which will alos output multivalu fields as separate records. I have also developed a visual basic program to build an Access database from the exported files' metadata and then load/reload data into the Access database tables. A good part of what I do is data conversion. Please take a look at my website. Feel free to contact me if you feel the need. I think I can be of assistance.

Search this message base as I posted some example code of a quick and dirty export program that normalizes mv data. The output file(s) can then be imported into whatever you want.

If the version is indeed Rev G2B then the dictionaries should contain the parent/child relationships of the mv data which would make a generic routine a lot easier to do. The lack of this info in the ARev dictionaries was IMHO a major oversight which stunted the capablities of RList and data exporting.

One only needs to see how Prime Information handled AMV data in queries to see the lost potential.

Try searching on 'normalize' or 'export'
