Ok, I've seen this question asked before, but I have not seen an answer that works for me yet. I have an Arev application running on NT server. It takes 45 min to an hour to login to the arev application from a remote user, using dial-up networking. I have mapped a drive to the Application directory on the user machine. The connection speed is not great but just browsing the network neighborhood and doing othe Window and Dos based task do not seem to bring the system to it's knees, why does the Arev Application?. I have just purchased OpenInsight to hopefully start converting my Arev applications, but OpenInsight will not even start from a remote user, so what would be the point. Any suggestions?

If you have access to server statistics, i.e., NLM_STATS, looking at the number of requests on your workstation can shed some light on this. I just tried it. As soon as I logged in, I typed NLM_STATS and selected comminication, client, total. There were 1892 requests and 1892 replies. On a remote connection, unless you have as many of your files as possible attached locally, all these requests and replies must go over the modem. This is why we use remote control software. This way only screen updates get sent across.

I've never had much luck using dial-up networking with AREV and have never gotten it to work with OI, probably due to the graphical nature of the Windows run-time environment. I think that timing is the real issue, but I can't vouch for it. We use PC Anywhere or Co-Session for remote access (See Victor's response) without any problems. I have a client with a full T1 line for remote access and even with a 56K Shiva Lan-Rover operating at 115KBPS, the response to dial-up networking to load AREV is over 1 hr. Remember, that AREV transfers over 2.5 MB of data at boot time. It's possible to use a local LISTS table since it's unique to the workstation anyway and perhaps some other local tables but I'm not sure how much it will buy you since nothing takes effect until AREV loads its boot process.

The problem of the remote access is the band width that one has, this it is very poor and expensive. Arev during its operation can consume too many Kbytes, mainly in the Attach, Select and reports. For remote communication I suggest you Terminal Windows Server or citrix, this generates you workstation virtual local running in oneself it pc. You worked like to speeds of a local station, for your modem pass data like screens, keyboard and you can print reports, reducing the I traffic necessary.

You can find but information in http://www.microsoft.com/MANAGEMENT/wshobj2.htm or in

http://www.citrix.com

With cossesion and pc-anywhere, they work very similar, but in them it is necessary to dedicate a workstation for connection, if you have several remote accesses this can be expensive.

This may be hard but don't go with Revelation. Make the jump to client server. I have made a living with Revelation and now have taken what I have learned and applied it to the "Microsoft" world. It makes a great match!
