AREV tables in OpenInsight (OpenInsight Specific)

I am about to embark on an OI conversion of an AREV 3.x application. Can anyone tell me if there are major advantages in creating brand new OI tables and importing the AREV data vs simply adding the AREV tables to the OI application? Are there any significant disadvantages to simply adding the AREV tables…? I've read some of the documents related to the conversion process, but wanted some additional input. Any real world advice on the conversion process would be greatly appreciated as well.
Thanks.

Gene,
If you are doing parallel development so that users can run both systems simultaneously then you will need to use the same datatables. If you have the freedom of developing independant of the existing AREV system then take your pick. If the OI app will not differ from the AREV app (i.e. you wouldn't be creating new fields or changing the general layouts of the dictionaries) then it's usually easier just to adopt the AREV tables. The only exception to this would be if there are several non-compliant table and column names, that is, extensive use of dots rather than underscores. In any event, we've had good success simply creating shadow REVMEDIA entries and duplicate column entries rather than re-creating the dictionaries altogether. This has allowed us to develop OI apps for our AREV customers and has avoided the need for us to make any modifications of the original AREV application ahead of time.

I've always just attached the tables right in. Have a couple of systems like that. I generally do most of my testing on the SAMPLE app that ships with ARev and just attach it right in from it's ARev location. I know the structure better after all these years.

Gene,
If you have 8-bit characters in your data they will appear differently in Arev and OI windows. And it's not just foreign characters among the 8-bit characters. E.g if you have the characters ¢§? in your Arev tables they will look like õ% when you bring them up in an OI window. I think. (Character sets are messy stuff so one should never be too sure about anything.)

Oystein,
Guess that depends on whether you bring it up in AREV or OI…!
Thanks!

Aaron,
Thanks for the input. Given what you folks have said, I am going to attempt to attach the tables vs. create them.
Thanks again.
