Some 'New' ideas in databases- we've had them for a long, long, time.

Our time has come!

I recollect quite a few years ago RTI (UK) gave me a copy of a rare review of ARev in a PC journal in which ARev was described as the best kept secret in the database world!

The same can be said for OI

It indeed seems none to early to let the secret out!

Presumably it's the old problem I suffer from similarly that, if you don't spend megabucks advertising in them, the journals won't even give you a line let alone more, however relevant and useful it might be for their readers.

So, let's add to the thread and make them notice us! I've already made my post, so why don't other users jump on the thread?

Can't hurt, and maybe they'll remember us…

As a long term subscriber to PC Magazine (UK edition) I've often noticed the total lack of any mentions of RTI's products, releases, etc. in comparative reviews, news items, etc.

I've written to them several times over the years pointing out to them that they're hiding the "best kept secret of the database world" from their readers. Therefore, what other similar mind-blowing things are they keeping from me which they should be informing me about??? No response!

I followed your link to the item and printed it out. It does raise one or two points of relevance to Arev & OI users. Our systems have quite a few links between files each of which can have from around 50 to 200 or more fields. The possibilities for joins are therefore rather numerous. Add to this other manipulations (e.g. an mv of floor areas might need the individual floors or a total area, a set of valuations might need all or just the latest, etc.).

Our users might need anything at any time and the possible symbolics to meet all eventualities can be seen to be virtually limitless. We cannot provide symbolics for every permutation and combination. OI licence restrictions apart, the users cannot be expected to set them up themselves nor is it practical for us to provide them rapidly on demand.

We've overcome the problem in our T-List report writer. Firstly the user can do file joins on the fly. Secondly, mv fields have a control for "all", "sum", "first" or "last". In fact this control is provided both pre-join and post-join. Nextly, as one could with RevG2B, mv fields can be grouped in the report spec in several AMV Groups and these not only cascade their displays independently but can also be subjected to their own individual selection criteria.

Having got this sorted out for OI, thanks to RTI's product compatibility, it's been ported back to Arev!

In due course I plan to use the "user" fields in dict items to indicate for fields with key refs to other files, which file they link to. Also for fields controlled by code lists, to indicate the code record. Also to indicate logical mv groupings. This should enable some wizards and help to make it easier and safer to use.

Not as fancy as Revelation Reporter but a lot easier to use.

Hope this tickles a few grey cells!

Best wishes

Richard
