I have been running AREV 3.12 on a NT 4.0 service pack 3 for several months with no problems. I am now getting this error:

"This device does not exist on the network. Reading drive ?"

"abort, retry, fail"

It gets worse as more users logon. It almost always happens when searching indexes. The network connection is not actually lost as far as I can tell as explorer indicates the drive is still good and other drives on the network are good. Cabling has been checked, okay.

How is network performance vs. your settings controling timeout threshold? Perhaps you are simply timing out.

You might check on something I noticed at one of my customer sites. For certain machines, the 'Green' features on some workstations was causing the connection to disappear. Try disabling some or all of the 'Green' features of the workstations to see if that eliminates some of the problem. I realize that this would not cause further problems as more people logged on, but it might be a place to start.

What protocol are you running? NetBEUI or TCP/IP? Are all of the machines on the same protocol or different? Any Novell servers on the same network? For a while I saw NT lose connection on machines that were connected to Novell as well.

One other item to check, what type of network cards in the workstations? I've seen some that are real particular (and their big name brand cards too). PCI cards or ISA? One maker's PCI cards seem to cause problems in some machines on my client's network.

The network for both Novell and NT seems to be pretty stable at this time, but it has taken a bit of tinkering to get it all 'just so'.

Hope my ramblings help. If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me.

We had a similar problem here with an AREV 3.10 application on NT 4.0 on network that also had Netware 4.0. The AREV workstations would lose their connections to the NT server. They would not reconnect. The NT server was in a state where it would not allow any connections. Only cold booting the NT server would let the connections to restore. We ran AREV on the NT server for about a year, but this problem went from very rare to several times a week. Microsoft was no help (imagine that !!). Finally last week, we moved the AREV app to a Netware server and shut off the NT box.

Good luck….
