A client has asked for urgent advice about buying an Acer Centrino Laptop to run an Arev 3.12 aplication.

Does anyone know if Arev will run on a CENTRINO laptop? I was thinking of the problem with P4 processors not supporting EMM for ARev.

Any advice would be welcome, thanks.

I don't know yet if there are any problems with Centrino processors. However, the EMM problem is not related to P4 processors. It is a BIOS problem. We have several P4 machines that support or don't support EMM.

Thanks Donald, Of course the problem is you don't know until you have loaded ARev and tried. Laptops are a bit expensive for trial and error!

Have them take AREV on a USB Stick and see if it runs in the showroom :-)

Or, pay with a credit card. In that event, defective products can always be returned. That's what I did with a DELL INSPIRON.

But given they DESIGN it not to use EMM can you get away with this or are they just being nice?

Not useful as to specific, but as to generic:

ARev runs fine (with EMS) on my Dell Inspiron 600M (Pentium M "pseudo Centrino" (Dell WiFi card)).

FWIW.

Sprezz,

If you "design" a car with square tires, does this mean the unsuspecting consumer has to put up with it? Or are you illustrating the difference between British and American industry and consumer protection laws?

I'm doubtful that this is a valid analogy. Square tires will not really allow a car to operate "as specified". EMM is not really a requirement for a computer to operate "as specified"…especially when DOS support does not exist nor do Windows application use it. Now, if you specify this as a requirement to the manufacturer up front and they say that this is supported then you have a basis for a return.
