A client is experiencing multiple GFEs, usually but not exclusively in Group 0 which appear to be randomly generated. We have tried all the usual fixes, virus scan (McAfee 7.1) excludes .LK and .OV, all users access via Windows 2000 service, all caching disabled etc but problem persists.

System setup is

Server NT4 Sp6 with Windows Service 2.1

Wkstns Windows XP Sp2

Arev 3.12

They tried upgrading to UD3 and Windows 2003 server but this made no difference

Any advice, help or suggestions, however outrageous gratefully recieved!

This remind me of a situtions we saw some years ago on our AREV system.

GFE's up the the ga-zoo. Unexplainable, random, etc.

In our case, fwiw, we found the culprit to be caused by a faulty fan in the server. With the fan not working, the memory chips got hotter than normal. This cause the physical properties of the memory to become unstable and caused the GFE's.

Once we diagnosis the cause, we opened the server case. Placed a fan nearby and blew directly on the server. This made the difference and helped greatly. The problem was ultimatedly fixed when HP came in and replaced the FAN.

Assuming that this problem is a recent one you might start looking at various hardware issue, such as, bad NIC cards, cables, power, etc. As we all know, "things break."

Good luck. Also for what it's worth, you should convert your app to OI if possible. We're glad that we did. I don't think that you will regret this.

The group 0 is used much frequently than other groups, so the probability of (both HW,SW) problems are of course higher.

Your software problem seeking seems to be done well …

Hardware issues are not last to be considered … I agree.

Please let us know how you solved it.

No, its still a problem.

We sort of discounted hardware problems as it happens on two different servers and when the data is copied to stand alone PC and run there.
