I am running Adv. Rev. on a Novell 4.1 server with only DOS namespace.

Adv. Rev. is the foundation for an application that the bookstore is making available to the accademic departments on campus to order textbooks over the network. At this University each department has autonomy in selecting what type of computer and OS they want to run, so I face quite a variety. We have been doing this for about three years. The situation I'm facing now involves a PowerMac. Historically what we've been able to do is load Insignia Solutions SoftPC on pre-PowerMac's and come in with the provided Netware drivers. When PowerMac's came along SoftPC worked with an initial complaint from the software. When the PowerMac's OS was upgraded then we had to move to SoftWindows, which worked at the DOS level. I did not load Windows. Now they no longer support or sell the Softwindows or SoftPC product, but have gone to SoftWindows95. I've am able to make the network connection alright back to our server. The command line for all of these, approximately 150 departments of which approximately 25 hav

e an Apple product, the command line I use reads:

AREV.EXE CURINS where CURINS refers to tables that reference previous semesters ordered books and new books specific to this department. CURINS is specific to a department, i.e. Chemistry department would be CHEMISTRY. This situation is my first attempt at SoftWindows95. What is happening is when the application is launched, I get the logo screen and the message:'Processing Please wait', then about the time I would normally get a screen prompting for a password, I get a black screen with a message at the top which says: 'RPT50' 'Line 1. B114Maximum number of variables exceeded.

One of the things we tried in our attempt to determine why it was not working, was to type at the command prompt from a Win95 DOS session:

AREV /x. What we got was a look at what came previous to the start of the message, which was about two lines of illegible garbage. Anybody have any ideas would be appreciated. Our network connections are direct and not thru a modem.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Phil

Only advice I can give you is ensure that the emulator is also emulating EMS memory. Load ARev with a /X /M4096 option.

If this doesn't work, try loading ARev with a /O (letter O) option.

ARev makes some real funky low level intel 8086 calls and I'm not convinced all of them are supported on anything other than pure DOS.

You might try using VirtualPC instead of SoftWindows95. VirtualPC emulates standard Intel hardware instead of trying to emulate Windows itself. This means you can run any OS that is compatible with Intel hardware on VirtualPC (including DOS, if that is what you need to do; VirtualPC even comes in a DOS only version I believe).
