What do I need to know about running AREV 3.12 on XP? The server is a Netware 4.1 server running the NLM and most workstations are currently 98se.. We are going to have to start buying XP workstations soon and I wanted to know if there was some information document I would need to find out all the specifics. Thanks

Novell Shell is 4.83 PLUS patches, particularly VIPX patch. The patches will be included in next release ie 4.84. Without VIPX patch to 4.80 to 4.83 shells databases like Arev / OI are a DOG. Also you might turn off XP themes on the 16bit compatability stuff in the shortcut.

We are currently testing XP against our hybrid Arev 3.12, and OI 3.74 and VB 6 (don't ask) application on Netware 6 using LH NLM 5.5, and Netware Client 4.83
Is doesn't work. We know (?) that the server setup is ok, since the old try and true Win98 client with Netware Client 3.32 works great on the new Netware 6 server.
We are getting FS472 errors from the XP client. We have frame type to 802.2, Revparam files, the lhipxtsr 1.5 loads for Arev but we are still getting the FS 472 error.
If we get an answer I'll post it - in the mean time help please!!!!!

Ralph,
FS472 may be something as easy as specifying IPX as the preferred protocol. You didn't mention it in your posting; do you have it set that way?

I'm running the vipx patch on a Novell 5 server with XP client 4.83 and Arev is so slow its a joke. I had no noticible improvement when I introduced the vipx.
Fortunately, it's in-house. I've spent many an hour trying many of the tips and tricks mentioned in this forum but to no avail. So please make sure you check a couple of test units before you make any big changes.
If anybody out there has had decent success rate in performance, I'm always prepared to try things and report back.

The VIPX patch was a joke until I found out about REM out the two lines in CONFIG.NT left behind by the Microsoft driver. Now it runs well in XP.
"In the case of the Microsoft client, if it's present when installing the Novell client, the Novell install will offer to un-install it. The problem is, this un-install process seems to often leave behind the two lines in autoexec.nt which loaded the Microsoft netware client for dos sessions

Kevin, weren't you going to put this into the Knowledgebase?

Dave,
This issue (of cleaning up the autoexec.nt ) was disccussed at length at Vegas conference with Don L. - Kevin was at the session.
As you may have observed, this problem afflicts some and not others, hence the totally divergent experiences. I agree, the fix and issues need documentation, Not all will think to do a search on this topic.
As mentioned at Vegas, Novell have stated that they plan to roll the fix (VIPX etc) into next 4.8x release, until then …

Richard is right,
the only lines in my config.nt are
dos=high, umb
EMM=RAM
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
files=250
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\haspdos.sys
don't know what the last line does - maybe thats a problems?
I can tell you that Arev is still slow as ….. it's unbearable.

I tried your solution remarking out the lines in the autoexe.net as you suggested and went from a 4+-min login to a 30sec. login and with the speed of a 2gz not a 133mhz. I am using Novell 4.11 running ipx and a brand new compaq evo310 running xp with novell's client 4.88 SP1. Thanks Again work great

You have a lot of unnecessary stuff in autoexec.nt. I know the help file says to use EMM, but you do not have to on any of our IBM or Compaq machines. himem.sys also seems out of place and the last line is odd. These are the lines in our autoexec.nt file, and our expanded memory works just fine:
@echo off
REM Install CD ROM extensions
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\mscdexnt.exe
REM Install network redirector (load before dosx.exe)
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\redir
REM Install DPMI support
lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx

I'm with you guys on the config.nt however are there any specifics on "pif" configuration I should know about? I'm running AREV 3.12 on Novell 5.1 sp4. Client=XP(no SP) with NW 4.83. AREV is behaving as if there is no EMS. When I do a WHO at TCL it says expanded mem inactive. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

You should install SP1 for the Novell Client 4.83. This fixes a number of issues with XP/Novell Netware 5.x, including problems with drive mapping, etc. Service packs on the Server seem up-to-date (at least my clients who use XP are using this server configuration). Make sure you have EMS enabled on the workstation. Specify no more than 4096K of EMS, disable XMS and Uses HMA. I suggest that you disable screen savers and enable Print Screen. Make sure that you allow background processing. Also, in the Troubleshooting tab, be sure to disable Write Behind Caching. If you have trouble with DOS printer capture, start AREV from a Batch file. Those are the easy tweaks.

FROM MY UNDERSTANDING SOME COMPUTERS ARE NOT CAPABLE OF PRODUCING EXPANED MEMORY, I HAVE AN IBM THINKPAD A21, THAT JUST WON?T PRODUCE EMM

Christopher,
What version of Windows are you running on your ThinkPad? You are right in that ThinkPads do not support EMM (most unfortunate, our office has 4 of them) but I was able to get EMM to function in Win98. After I upgraded to Win2000 my trick no longer worked.
Presumably the newer ThinkPads allow one to disable certain items in the BIOS (like USB port support) that is supposed to free up memory segments that are used by EMM. However, this hasn't worked for me either. I've had an A21p and an A31.

It came with windows 2000 and arev wouldn?t work then, I upgraded it to windows xp and it still would not produce EMM. I talked to IBM support and they tried for a hour to produce EMM with no success, then after escalating the support call, they came back with a response that the hardware is not capable of doing this
