Just wanted to take a moment and thank Mike and Nancy Ruane and all of Revelation Software for all their work on a great conference.

Thanks

All I can say is -WOW!

I'd say it was the best Revelation show ever- and I've been to them all, from the Cogent ones, RTI, Mike Tankle's Philly show, and all of ours. We're putting together a wrap-up document, but what did you guys think?

Mike

I think we can safely say that the organisation was exemplary and that the venue was possibly one of the best so far. There was some excellent technical content and it was good to see IBM there.

So we'd second Sig's bravo!

After getting home last night (our flight was delayed) I wrote an email to a client giving my impression. I quote: "We did have a great time. Perhaps the best conference yet in many respects."

Since we stayed in the area for a couple of extra days I was able to chat with quite a few others who were doing the same (it seems that staying Sunday to Sunday was cheaper for international travelers). The excitement and energy that everybody walked away with was infectious.

An excellent job by all, especially considering that Revelation was short by a couple of staff members. You wouldn't have known that less people were doing more work.

I was not able to attend the conference but the lineup of speakers/talks seemed impressive when I read the brochure. What did I miss? What were some of the presentations that knocked socks off?

Should I be concerned about IBM? Is IBM positioning itself to buy Revelation and then roll it into its U2 group? Is DB2 the path to take in future or is MV still viable?

Thank you,

Clark

This is only my second Rev Conference ever but it was quite good. I wish I had spent more time in Seattle as I realized having lived there before how much I like the Emerald City.

BTW somewhere between the Westin and SeaTac I lost my cell phone, probably it slipped of my belt clip in the taxi and I didn't notice until after I had checked in. From the position of where the clip was on my belt it sometimes snap off the clip when I bend down to pick stuff up or if I lean forward while sitting. So it could have popped off when I stooped to pick up my luggage in the EB room or breakout 1 rooms. I've replaced the phone and SIM card so not a big deal except a couple of contacts I had in the phone memory with no backup. The cab driver just gave me a generic receipt without his car # on it and calling the phone was useless because it was in the silent mode for the talks. :(

Since I was a presenter and so were two others from my staff I won't really comment on this too much. I did have my favorites, however, I also believe that the overall quality and content of everyone's presentation was better than ever. Mike commented that these presentations are largely given by developers, not professional speakers, so in light of that we were given some exceptional presentations.

Should I be concerned about IBM? Is IBM positioning itself to buy Revelation and then roll it into its U2 group? Is DB2 the path to take in future or is MV still viable?

Obviously Revelation should respond directly to this issue but Mike addressed these very questions in the closing session. No, you should not be worried about IBM. Mike likes working for himself way too much to consider working for IBM. The partnership with IBM is not that tight or restrictive. MV is not going away.

The keynote speaker from IBM was very clear that DB2 is not the best solution for all problems. That's why they have a portfolio of database server products. They seem very committed to the U2 product line.

no .. nothing to worry about

To paraphrase a great writer " .. the report of mv's death is greatly exaggerated .. "

Before SQL there was MV and there will be MV after its death

Clark-

The presentations went very well- I'd say the FreedomBase, Arev32, and OI 8.0 Overview were the best attended, but the Carl Pates and Kevin Fournier presentations were also packed as well. The third-party product specific talks fared less well, but still had more than a dozen attendees. We'll be posting a wrapup document soon, with a description and pictures of the events.

In fact, if any attendees have any pictures, let us know and we'll post them as well.

Regarding IBM, as Don mentioned, I do like working for myself too much to sell the company. The only restriction we have in the IBM agreement is that we cannot sell U2 to existing U2 users. There's nothing about selling the company, swapping all OI users over to U2, or anything like that.

Watch for the recap- it'll be posted here and put into the News and Info section.

Thanks-

I’ve been to all the conferences except the first two you ran Mike and I’ve got to say my top 3 conferences (not necessarily in any order) were….1988: the first Rev conference we ran at Cogent in West Palm, FL, it started the trend and made Jim A realize he had to start running them himself…1992: the first New Orleans Conference by RTI, maybe the largest group ever, first release of OI, and we got to see Phish play at Tipitinas…2007: Seattle, great sessions, Rev staff more accessable, IBM, 8.0, and you’re only starting to rev your engines, the best is yet to come…Looking forward to Vegas again.

As I said in the closing remarks, I don't run this show, Nancy does. I just show up and do what I'm told.
