Does the NPP that is included with OI 4.0.1 diminish in any way the need for the Windows 2000 Service?

Some of the documentation indicates that with less than 10 users the NLM is not "required." So, with 1 development copy of OI and 3 runtime-only users, is the Windows 2000 Service essential?

Thanks.

The need for Windows2000 Service has not been changed with 4.0.1. The same requirements exist.

I have not read this in any documentation but I imagine it is referring to speed and performance. In this case performance is okay without the NLM or Windows2000 Serive. However, you will still have the potential for GFEs resulting from workstation lock-ups, faulty NICs, etc.

Don,

Thanks for your help. The information I find confusing is found in the the Windows 2000 (NT) Technical FAQ (http://www.revelation.com/WEBSITE/knowledge.nsf/ec0a0b99c363fb31852566f50065224a/ac7fcb4da8b03abd8525640d005eede5?OpenDocument):

"4. Do I have to use the Windows 2000 Service in conjunction with the Network Performance Pack (NPP) or is there a situation in which I only need to use the NPP?

"The general guidelines are as follows:

If you are running OpenInsight or Advanced Revelation on a Windows 2000/NT Server, and you are using Win 95/NT/2000 client workstations, you need the Network Performance Pack. If you have more than 10 users accessing your system, we would suggest the Network Performance Pack in conjunction with the Windows 2000 Service for maximum performance. For all versions of OpenInsight over 3.12, the NPP is included with the software. If you are using versions below 3.12, you need to purchase it as an additional product."

Bill,

That certainly does sound confusing. There are situations where people do not use the Revelation Service, but use the NPP only. These are normally peer-to-peer configurations, with only a couple of users.

As far as the new NPP 2.1 that is part of the new Revelation Windows 2000 Service 2.1, it runs much like the old NPP - no GFE protection, and a tendency to slow down as you add more and more users. Add the Sevice to it, and you get the protection and much faster performance.

When I get a chance, I will modify that White Paper to eliminate confusion.
