Is anyone familiar with the procedures for installing OI 7.0 on Linux? Is there a documentation set available? Leon says to upgrade 4.x to 7.0 and to copy the resulting directory to Linux. Are there any other steps required? I've got a copy of RedHat Linux 9 Professional.

Sorry to bug you guys with these questions, but I'm dying to ditch Windows. Thanks!

H,

It's a little more complicated than that, but I can get you started. You will probably need more help than I can provide.

First, you need to realize that OI running on a Linux box with Windows workations attached is different than OpenInsight for Linux (OIL).

Let's say you have a Linux box on the network that your workstations connect to with a SAMBA connection, and you no longer want to keep your Networked copy of OI on your Windows 2000 Server. You can move a networked copy of OI to that Samba machine and access it with your Windows workstations (all this while following proper licensing guidelines, of course). This should work with little or no problem. If you plan on keeping your workstations talking to the copy of OI on your Linux box, adding the Universal Driver to the picture will make the data more secure.

Now you have a networked copy of OI on an Linux "Server", like you would on a Windows or Novell Server.

OIL is for pure Linux networks. This means no SAMBA connections, no Windows. This is not what you have in your office right now, and as a result your copy of OIL will not work on a pure Linux network.

For more details on OIL, contact info@revelation.com.

Hope it helps,

Kevin

I assume OIL is for pure Linux networks, and with OIL on a Linux workstation it means you cannot access LH data on a Netware (or Windows) server? Right?

You really to ask Mike for vacation!

Amen to that!

My last paragraph should read:

"OIL is for pure Linux networks. This means no SAMBA connections, no Windows. This is not what you have in your office right now, and as a result your current copy of OI will not work on a pure Linux network."

One little "L" and the world is turned upside down!

Thanks for the assist…

Kevin

Thanks, Kevin. I've sent a query to info@rev per your suggestion. I'm getting itchy about ditching Windows and would like to see if a little OIL will cure it. ;-)
