Our AREV 2.12 application runs about 10x slower under NT Workstation 4.0 than it does under Windows 95. We use AREV NLM version 1.10 on a Novell 3.11 server.

Everything is slower: logging on, batch processes, and interactive windows. The application remains stable; locking works and nothing crashes. It's just pitifully slow. The NT task manager shows CPU utilization near 100% even just sitting at TCL.

Our network administrator is reluctant to use Netware Client 32 for NT Workstation. Would this really fix things? Is there anything else we can do?

We would be grateful for any suggestions.

Jim,

Arev is a dos app that does not expect any other process to use cpu cycles, so under NT you would see very high utilization. I would lower its priority, or increase background jobs priority. Also you should make sure you are use command.exe and not cmd for the command interpreter.

When I used NT I used the intranetware client and found it to be reliable and fast. Will it make NT run like dos? No, WinNT does not run dos apps as well as other MS products. Will it help Arev run faster? Yes.

Your response convinced our network manager to try the Novell client, and it speeded things up dramatically. Based on my initial tests it actually does run almost as fast as under Windows 95 now!! Thank you!!
