'Too Many Users ' Problem with NLM, Windows95, Arev 3.12 (AREV Specific)

Can anyone help with this problem?
We're getting a spurious 'Too many users' message which prevents additional people from logging into our networked Arev database, even though the actual # of users is well under our maximum of 16 concurrent licensed users.
Configuration: Arev 3.11
Netware 4.11Arev NLM 1.12Mostly Windows 95 clients, some DOSThis is a recent problem: we've run the database for over a year with numerous users, with the NLM, without problems. The problem MAY be related to an increasing # of Windows 95 users, as we've noticed that
some Windows 95 users try to exit the database by closing
the window, without logging off – however, once this happens,
usually neither they or anyone else can get back into the
database.
We are also finding that at some times some userids are
able to access the database while others still get the 'too many users' message.
Thanks!

Any chance they're loading multiple AREV sessions per machine?

This is a response to similar question posed by Kevin Flynn 5-15-98. It has been an ongoing problem with several of my client sites as well. Also search this forum for "too many users" and you will find other reasons for the "too many users problems". Feel free to contact me via email if you have questions or you find a solution.
Thanks.
We have similar ongoing problems at several client sites. Just today I have been able to isolate part of the cause. In our case, we have multiple servers at the sites in question. Specific to one site, we found the following:
-One user was also attaching to a second Novell server, which is acting as their web server.
-All other users only attach to the main server.
-User attaching to second server is the only one getting the "too many users" error message.
- The main server is NetWare 4.10.
- The second server is NetWare 4.11.
- When user logs off the second server, he can get into Arev without error. And he can continually replicate the situation.
I will be conferring with my Network Admin when he returns and may have additional information for you. In the meantime, if you find anything else out, please let me know.

A friend of mine who is much more network-literate than I am did a lot of experiementation and ultimately found that the latest version of the Novell 32-bit client resolved this problem. As I recall, he seemed to think that both AREV and Novell were at fault.

You only get the too many users message when all available Novell servers cannot process a user lock request. There are a few reasons why this could happen.
You have used all of the available users A workstation/session is not releasing the lock There are things acting as servers you aren't really expecting toGenerally it's the last category that causes the problem. Certain CD-ROM servers will act as Novell servers and fail the user lock call. Running file and print sharing across Novell networks will cause the user lock to fail as well.
If it's machine specific or user specific then you can look at their configurations and see which category the problems fall under.

Hi Jill,
We had the same problem and it was diagnosed as incorrect CLIENT32.NLM version. We had been using 2.11 for some users. We went back, de-installed the client, installed ver 2.2 (and had a look at the Shortcuts and printer configs while we were there for grins)and Lo, the problem was solved. K Gilfilen mentions this solution in an earlier email.
