There seems to be a problem when using COMMDRV.IBM and AREV while in a DOS window under Windows 95. I assume something to do w/ the way Win95 handles the com ports. I have seen references to the problem in other messages…
Is there a replacement, alternative or work around for accessing the COMM$ device provided by COMMDRV? A 32-bit, win95 version?
Running Windows 95, Arev 3.12, Novell 4.1x, NLM. Trying to capture Com2 connected to a scale. Need to run in a DOS Window.
Thanks.

There is a small programme around called CTLOAD which will happily load COMMDRV.IBM during the batch file that your WIN95 shortcut can call. I'll e-mail the stuff to you

I used to have a program that can load device drives from a command prompt. Worked great under Win95. I'll look about and see if I can find it, but if you search about, you should be able to find one.

After posting the message I did some searching and found a couple solutions. I found a old program (device.com) that an associate had I think came from a Novell utility bbs. I have tested it, and it does seem to load the comdrv.ibm correctly via a batch file in the Arev shortcut. Do not have any other docs/info on the s/w…
The best utility (although it's not free) I found was a program COMMDRV/DOS and COMMDRV/VXD from Willie's Computer (www.wcscnet.com). It allows any number of devices to be addressed by Arev, different ports, addresses, etc… Can also handle sharing, and high speed coms when using the VXD (the VXD for win95 is only required if higher speeds and sharing are needed). I had used an old version of the COMMDRV for Dos several yrs ago, used it to address 4 serial ports on a multiport i/o board in Arev - works well.
Thanks for the repsonses…
