I just installed Win98 SR-2 at home. I keep a copy of my work Arev at home just as a test ground. I'd like to know if I can apply FAT32 to the C: drive and not get into trouble running Arev with it. I have my drives partitioned and I could keep my H:\ drive just the way it is. So C: would be FAT32 and the partition with AREV would not be FAT32 if necessary.

Would it work ok?

Thanks!

As I understand it, you cannot usually change the format of a disk partition without first removing the contents (although some products like "Partition-Magic" claim you can). In any case back up first, and create a bootable boot diskette with SYS.COM, FORMAT.COM, FDISK, and a DOS text editor as well. Be sure to take a written copy of the BIOS disk settings from the hardware setup first.

AREV doesn't like being on compressed partitions, but other than that, AREV should work OK on either FAT or NTFS volumes.

Bear in mind that the partition size will store files in multiples of the allocation unit size (eg. 8192 bytes) so a 1 byte file occupies 8192 bytes of disk space. If you have a choice, a smaller setting for allocation unit size is better to conserve disk

space if you have lots of little files.

The Drive Converter tool that comes with Win98 allows you change from FAT to FAT32 without reformatting as long as a minimum amount of free space exists on the partition. See the Win98 Online help for instructions. As I recall this tool does not allow you to go from FAT32 to FAT as PartitionMagic 5.0 does. PM also allows you to merge partitions on the fly. This tool is very slow compared to PartitionMagic also.

To answer your question:

ARev runs fine in this configuration. I've been running Win98 SE on a FAT32 partition and ARev on a FAT16 partition for months with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks fellas,

Not to worry, I know I can apply FAT32 without an Fdisk using Win98's tool.

And, yes I have Partition Magic if I care to remove it later. I use Boot Manager because I run OS/2 also.

My only concern was if AREV would be ok with the OS running in FAT32 while it remained in a 16 partition.
