Has anyone been able to use Expanded Memory under WIN 2K PRO (or NT)? Our test computer CONFIG.NT has HIMEM and EMM=RAM statements loaded, but AREV still reports (@WHO) " Expanded Memory=Inactive ". Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Can EMM386 EMM manager be used under NT or WIN2K ?

Thanks,

There have been reports of problems with COMPAQ machines and expanded memory. Needs an update from Compaq.

Remember that under W2000 EMS works differently. When you start a DOS shell the first command that runs in the shell determines the EMS setting. So if you first run say LHIPXTSR or another batch process before AREV.EXE then that file will set EMS. You need to set EMS properties by right clicking this file and accessing the memory tab which defines a PIF file. If you just run AREV.EXE then do the same on that.

We use W2000 Prof and has 4MB EMS as usual.

Tony,

Thanks for the timely response. I just have few questions. I have tried to simplify the issue by trying to run my local (stand alone) copy of AREV. After setting the memory (EMS) for the AREV.EXE, and running under the DOS (shell) box by just typing AREV. The Expanded memory is still inactive. Now that I have set the EMS memory for the first executable file (AREV.EXE) in the DOS shell; what else need to be done to enable the setting ? As noted before, I have EMM=RAM in the CONFIG.NT setup file and tried to use the "EMM=A B RAM " setting without any success.

What other EM manager are you using ?

Our computers are all DELL pentiums (2000). Is there a hardware (BIOS) at issue here, like the COMPAQs do ?

Again, any response would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Raju T.

Are you using any command line options when kicking off Arev? If not, try using AREV /X /M4096

You need to create a _DEFUALT.PIF and place it in your windows path.

Right click on the desktop, pick "New" -] "Shortcut"

For the command line enter: %windir%\System32\command.com

For the name enter: _DEFAULT

Click Finish

Now right click on the new object _DEFAULT and set Memory -] Expanded (EMS) Memory total 4096 then on the Misc tab uncheck Background always suspend and set idle sensitivity to ]= 80% of the slider. Click ok.

Now copy or move this object to your Windows directory (Probably WinNT).

After this, anytime you run the command prompt it will pick up these settings. You can test this by typing "MEM" in the command prompt window.

Looks like Warren has already explained how to get the default dos session to use EMS.

We also use Dell Latitude and Dimensions and there is NO special bios or memory management needed.

We have a Compaq machine with this problem, and we have multiple IBM machines that are OK. All of these machines are configured the same, as far as we can tell.
