I have many clients using a POS app in AREV 2.1 on Win98SE systems.

Part of the application creates, writes or reads an OS file on the local C: drive.

Problem:

There have been several instances when the app cannot read an existing OS file or write to an existing OS file.

A full re-boot is required to gain access.

System is a stand-alone Win98SE.

Any ideas? Anybody experience similar problems?

Win 98 should have the write-behind cache disabled from the My Computer (where the operating system's Performance Options reside)

If you are using PDISK frequently in your session you may be running out of file handles.

Also turn any virus checkers off and see if the problem abates.

Try increasing the file handles set in the operating system and see if that improves the situation.

Thanks for the help

1 - W98 has write behind cashing off checked

   this should not be problem

2 - programs use setptr. I assume that this calls same pgms as Pdisk

File handles could be the problem. I was unaware that Pdisk
would "use up" a position each time invoked.
I will check file handles and wait and see what happens.
This will be one of those problems that
will be proven fixed only if no occurances
happen in the next 12 months.

Thanks Sprezzatura (I wish you guys would sign ur real names

so I could see who has helped me. Or maybe you are only one

and want to pretend you are many? ) Thanks again.
