I have been looking at a G2B database (for the first time) and I have figured out most of it. I have a couple questions (since I have no documentation) on one of the dictionaries.

I have two fields called…

ID R9

@ID R10

I have done list on them and can't determine the differences, this field is used for the unique key, but what is the difference between them. I'm guessing "R" is right-just and "L" is left-just but not sure of the "@".

Also is there a special meaning to a "G" in the output of a LOOKDICT command?

And finally, I have a CUSTOMER L30 and a DOWN2.DAT*CUST of L30???

and finally, finally, the first column of the LOOKDICT is a number of 0 through 7, what does this represent?

Thanks in Advance,

The @ just identifies it as having been created by the system. By consensus ID refers to the primary key and primary keys are always field 0 (Field Marker Count - FMC). Multi part keys are field no 0 but with a part no. So you just have 2 synonym dictionary items for the same thing - the primary key.

Also is there a special meaning to a "G" in the output of a LOOKDICT command?

This is a "Group" field and will display several fields when chosen, or subselect in some way. I could create a group field called say NJ with field 3=WITH STATE=NJ'" then LIST CUSTOMERS NJ.

And finally, I have a CUSTOMER L30 and a DOWN2.DAT*CUST of L30???

Probably just synonyms again.

and finally, finally, the first column of the LOOKDICT is a number of 0 through 7, what does this represent?

This is the field number, all fields are variable in length so we go by position within the record

It is long time since I have worked with G2B but from what I can remember here goes.

Your two fields ID R9 and @ID R10 are probably the same field named twice for reporting purposes. To check this EDIT DICT FILENAME and look to see what number is on line 5 of the dictionary record, if they are the same number then they are the same field. The output of a dictionary represents a field type. There are three types "F" "G" "S". Your "G" means that it is part of a grouping of dictionary records. The "S" represents a Symbolic field ie: a formula has been created to display data. The "F" means that it is a pure data field, the data field number on line 5 points to a specific field in the record.

Your next question is difficult to answer without seeing your database but Customer L30 could either be a field or a file you will need to do a lisfiles to check that, The L30 means that it is justified Left 30 characters. The DOWN2.DAT*CUST is probably a dual part key record in a file.

In the lookdict the number 0 through 7 points to the field number as mentioned above.

Hope this helps

I don't think there was an EDIT command in REVG. The options are TEXT, or perhaps more appropriately for a dictionary item, BUD.

EDIT gave you a line editor just like Pick's - V16 in AREV.
