UPDATE.DRIVERS (RevG Specific)

I have _finally_ been able to get back to this project… I was told some time ago that to enable the byte-range locking on RevG, all I had to do was run "UPDATE.DRIVERS" at the TCL prompt.
Is this routine supposed to be built in? There is no such record in the VOC. Is it in one of the system files? I've been looking everywhere… the installation I'm working with is for Novell, bumped to 12 users.

At TCL, typing
:RUN VERBS UPDATE.DRIVERS
gives the error message:
"$UPDATE.DRIVERS" not on file
I didn't create this particular installation. Could there be something missing?

Well it is in our copy of RevG here… if the installation has never been bumped then it might not be there. Is there a file NETWORK.DRIVERS attached?

Regarding your last response, and my attempts to run UPDATE.DRIVERS on my RevG installation…
The installation I am using has been bumped for Novell and has been copied from a live client. I am attempting to run it on a Real32 installation (basically Multiuser DOS). I have been assured by the techs at Real32 that their OS supports DOS locking; hence my interest in changing the locking drivers from Novell to DOS.
There is no file called NETWORK.SETUP, but there is a record in the VOC called that. It seems to consist of RECREATE-FILE statements. There is no record called UPDATE.DRIVERS or NETWORK.SETUP in the VOC file.
You're saying that your copy of RevG has this UPDATE.DRIVERS in the VERBS file? Would it be too much to ask for you to just email it to me? My email is alvaro@athena-eng.com. Then we could settle this. I don't know how it is that I don't have this utility, but I don't.

We'd be happy to help but the situation you are describing sounds like a license breach so we'd need some statement as to why this isn't the case - e.g. transfer of license etc.

I see your point. Originally, we were experimenting with our own copy of Revelation G, which was single user. When we couldn't find the UPDATE.DRIVERS record there anywhere, we thought it might be on the bump disk, so we started playing with a live, bumped installation from one our clients which _should have had_ (we thought) all the necessary stuff. To be honest, I was so driven with the technical issue that the possible license breach never occurred to me. I'm just trying to get this to work, and I'm flabbergasted that I don't have this UPDATE.DRIVERS record even on a live, bumped version…
Look, it's not my intention here to "get away" with anything. All I want to do is to see whether it is possible for locking to occur in Real32 in a multi-programming environment. If we can get this to work, we will have shown that Rev G can run on yet another platform, and we may be able to sell our package to people who would never have purchased a network due to the cost per seat. (It was always our intention to buy network licenses even in this case, with no actual network.) I have been working on this off and on for months now.
In addition, if UPDATE.DRIVERS is supposed to come with the developer version, I can reasonably tell you it didn't come in our package, or if it did it got corrupted or deleted somehow. Thus, I am technically asking for a replacement; I should have always had the ability to change the network drivers on this installation, and I would have been deprived of this aspect of Rev G functionality without the said component.
Sincerely,
Alvaro Fernandez

Hi… has any determination been made with respect to whether I will be allowed to change the network drivers to DOS based from Novell-based?

We cannot make such a determination as we are not Revelation. We can therefore only suggest that you contact Revelation directly and if THEY OK it we can see if we can be of assistance.

I have found the file in the utilities disk in the meantime. . I'm sorry…
Sorry about the mixup - I was under the impression had some "official" capacity vis-a-vis Revelation products. No harm done.
BTW, I contacted Revelation in the meantime. The customer support person informed me that, since they don't support Revelation G or Advanced Revelation, they had no idea what I was even talking about. Yes, they did say that. I started by asking about Rev G, and they said they didn't support it. I was surprised, as I recalled the president saying they would provide support. But, I contemporized and said, well, where would the file be in Advanced Revelation. They told me they don't really support Advanced Revelation either - only Open Insight. Whatever…

Glad you're sorted! Normally these things live in Sysprog but…
As for support - officially Revelation only support products released within the previous 12 months. All other products are incident based support. This seems not unreasonable as training new people in old technology is difficult so we're all reliant on more experienced personnel for support, and more experienced personnel tend to cost more money!
This forum is not an official support place for Revelation as the online discussion rules and regulations state "The online discussion is not a source of official Revelation Software information. For official information, please refer to official sections of the Revelation Software web site".
