I feel like an idiot. Here goes:

As I have posted here before, I never fully got into the OI arena since all of my clients are still very happy with AREV. I do have a simple application that I would like to try with OI. I purchase OI 2.5 (on diskettes) and then upgraded to 3.1 (CD). I had performed the upgrade, but after my hard drive crashed in the fall of '97, I never re-installed OI. I decided to spend the weekend tinkering with the conversion of this one application from AREV to OI.

Of course, when I tried to install from the CD, it asks for the serial number. While I seem to have saved every single piece of paper from the CD update (including the one thanking me for purchasing it), I can't find the license agreement that supposedly has the serial #.

So I figured I'd install 2.5, just so I could play with it. The serial number for that (which does not work with the CD) is on the diskette. Now, problem #2: I have disks 1,3,4, and 5. I can't find disk #2.

I know it's already Sunday afternoon, and I'll end up calling Revelation on Monday, but does anyone have any interim ways to get around this? I'm hoping that I registered the 3.1 upgrade properly and that the number will be on file.

The reason why I am not ready to purchase the newest version is that I have already spent too much on 2.5 and 3.1 without using it (my fault), but I can't justify another $800 - $1,000 until I can see if moving at this time is going to be cost effective.

Thanks-

Michael

Michael,

I don't have an answer for your missing serial number but you can download an evaluation copy of OI which I believe is a fairly current version. This should at least allow you to do enough conversion work to see how you like it.

Don,

Except that you have to wait for Revelation Software to send you

a serial number by email .

Well, it's already midnight on Sunday, but your messages are encouraging if they'll send either my serial# or a new one by e-mail. I have a copy of the packing slip that came with the CD, I've been a Revelation customer since the early Cosmo's days, and I probably wouldn't spend a huge amount of time making believe my name is Wasserstein to use a version that was released 3 years ago .

One question though…the demo sounds like a good idea. Is it greatly different than 3.1? I lived through the Arev ages where I didn't see huge development differences (in many cases, some features were lost and they never did fix that "heading/footing" problem ). I also want to try an add-on from Tony Splaver and I wonder if the demo allows that. Finally, some demo's have time limits and knowing my past history with OI, I may need more than 30 days ;-) I have already downloaded all the applicable maintenance updates for 3.1.

Michael,

I believe the demo has a time limit although I've never downloaded it to be sure. I'm guessing this to be the case because at the recent Roadshow in LA we received CD's with an evaluation copy of OI 3.7 which was declared to have a time lock on it. (BTW RTI: These CD's were not successfully burned. So all they are good for is coasters. )

At OI's very core I don't think there is much difference between 3.1 and the later versions. However, if memory serves, 3.1 was very buggy (actually I think it was 3.14). The number of additional tools, source codes, and the stabilization of the product makes moving forward a no brainer. I would not want to cut my teeth on 3.1.

There shouldn't be any problem with installing the OIPI. Your only difficultly, of course, will be your learning curve with both OI and the OIPI. Fortunately there are many here who are familiar with both so don't hesitate to ask questions to speed your learning process.
