Greetings all:

Can anyone tell me how to capture the LPT1 port to a networked printer from an NT workstation? I have an AREV 3.12 app that needs to 'find' a printer elsewhere on a peer-to-peer LAN. Easy to do in W95 and W98, can't seem to find it in NT…

Also…

Once I get there I'm going to find some type of Apple/Mac printer on the other end. Can AREV print to something like this?

Thanks,

Mike

Should just be net use, though I have a memory of NT saying this can't be run in a DOS box. What you might have to do is load up a few printers using net use from a CMD box, then load ARev. Use SETPTR to switch from LPT1 to LPTx for the right printer.

As long as the network knows where it is, it will just output what's sent to it.

Assuming you've set the target printer up for sharing then on the NT workstation you're running ARev and wanting to capture the printing from you need to issue at the command prompt (NT/DOS) a:

NET USE LPT1: \\computername_with_printer\target_printer_name

You can find the computer and printer names by browsing the Network Neighborhood if you forget.

You may want to add the "/persistant=Yes" option switch to the NET USE command.

If you need to switch back to the local printer, issue a:

NET USE LPT1: /DELETE

The easiest thing to do is create a batch files to do the above and put shortcuts on the desktop to these BATs.

As for the target printer being Apple/Mac, I suppose it depends on the printer: it could use Postscript or Epson esc-0 codes or HP PCL, but it should print generic text in whatever the default font is set to. There was a thread on Postscripting with ARev but I haven't looked at it.
