This one has me stumped…

Whenever I launch AREV (3.12) I'm getting these results:

1. It gets to the point where it says "Initialization in process"

2. Then the whole screen gets shifted up two lines and at the bottom it says "This device does not exist on the network. reading device LP1?" (LP1 is not a typo, that's exactly what it says.)

3. On the line underneath this message, but below the screen visible area, it says "Abort, Retry, Fail?"

4. If I continue to press "F" for Fail it will repeat itself a few times and eventually load the menu and "seem" to run normally.

All this began to happen when I enabled File and Printer Sharing over a TCP/IP Dial-Up connection (I was testing to see if I could share a printer over the Internet). I have since disabled that but the problem still persists.

AREV 3.12, Win98 peer-to-peer, All Networks v1.5.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Hi Don,

Your problem is very similar to one I've had in the past.

We are on an NT 4 network with shared printers via HP Jetdirect boxes. We are using the TCP/IP protocol and AREV 2.12. Our workstations are running Win95 SR2.1.

Often I have to print to one of the shared printers from AREV. If I switch to the shared printer BEFORE starting AREV, I don't have any problems. But, if I Suspend out of AREV or Alt-Tab to switch to the desktop with AREV running and then switch printers, then the problem begins.

After printing I didn't switch the printer back to the local printer until after I exited AREV. Then, when I later returned, I got the exact error message you mentioned. AREV appears to be looking for the shared printer it printed to during the previous session.

This error message repeats itself until I once again Suspend from within AREV and issue the "NET USE LPT1: /DELETE" command. Even though I'm not actually connected to a shared printer at this time, AREV must somehow reset itself to the local port when this network command is issued.

So now, I always switch printers before starting AREV or I completely exit out of AREV, switch printers and then restart AREV. It's clunky, but I no longer get the "LP1" error message.

I also experience a similar problem with another DOS app we run. I now make it a practice to do printer switching outside of any DOS apps we have.

Hope this sheds some light on a solution for you.

I was getting this for a while myself, but unlike you, I couldn't see the text of the message, just the shifting. Eventually figured it out to be the printer definitions, LPT1, sharing, and MS Networking. Can't remember what the final settings were, but most likely I just removed the printers, since I load all the code in myself anyway.
