One of the concerns is the impact in performance that may be associated with this move. The following knowledgebase document mentions a performance degradation when moving from the NLM to the Windows 2000 2.1 Service.

Recently upgraded Arev 2.12 from Novell to a windows server utilizing the Universal Driver. 50+ users and the performance is a little faster, mainly due to better hardware for the windows server. Our sort file default location still resides on the Novell server and I expect a major performance increase once Novell is retired.
