Situation:

We are running Advanced Revelation Ver 2.03 on a Novell Network with Windows 95 workstations. Novell software is Netware 3.12 running on a Compaq Reliant 2500. The workstations are NEC Pentium 2200's with 64mB RAM. We have a dedicated Indexing machine and all other indexing functions are turned off.

Problem:

Whenever I open AREV 2.03 and then leave it open without using for a few minutes the application hangs and I have to use CTRL-ALT-DEL to get out of the AREV application.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff

Jeff,

Are you using the Revelation NLM? IF you aren't you should contact customer service at 800-262-4747 to purchase one.

Make sure that you are:

1) Allowing background processing

2) Have the screen saver disabled

3) Disable APM on the workstations

Do you have Background indexing on or a Background Process?

If indexing is on, you might want to flush all indexes to clear pending updates.

We too are having freezing problem. Here is what we have done:

Disabled scan on open w/Virus Scanners and excluded *.ov and *.lk.

Disabled Windows95 Writeback Cache

Used Client32 2.2 (cache writes off; Delay Writes off; File Cache 0; Max cache size 0; Opportunistic Locking Off; True Commit On;

Disabled APM.

Disabled Suspend Background

Implemented Turbod.exe Novell Patch

Netware 4.11 (DS Version 5.95 and clib 4.11k)

TSR is version 1.12 upgraded from 1.06

NLM is version 1.10 upgraded from 1.06

TSR is loaded via a batch file and a /p switch.

Unfortunatley, we too are still freezing and blowing the indexes on a hourly basis. What did you do to create the dedicated indexer? Do you have a guide or manual page number to create the dedicated indexer?

To create dedicated indexer, you create a new user, INDEXER.

Give it a different environment record than the other users.

In the INDEXER environment, set the background update and delay times to about 10 and 10.

In all other environments, set theses times to 0 and 0.

Find a spare workstation and login to ARev as the INDEXER user.

I had a problem similar to this and solved it. It turned out I had created the problem by selecting "always suspend" in the properties of the window AREV was operating in. Once I unchecked that box, the problem went away.
