Here's the full text of the error message reported:
The "LHOpen Session" call failed, returning LH error number 1022, file no. 0, group no. 0, Max no. of licensed users exceeded.
Could anyone provide any further details on this message? Is it because we've exceeded 256 concurrent users, and the licence hasn't been correctly expanded to 'unlimited' users?
Or have we have had 600 crashes since the last server reboot?
How serious is this… are we likely to suffer any data corruption as a result?
Any thoughts / ideas would be much appreciated!

I have since counted up the number of named pipes in the server manager. It's currently 246, but I think that some of the users may have logged out. Our runtime engine was bumped from 256 to 600 about 3 months ago, so it should not be that. Is there a maximum number of users for the NT service?
